Chevy Blazer Toad?

Is anyone towing a Chevy Blazer with automatic transmission? We bought a used 2000 Blazer years ago and back when I bought it I checked the owners manual- for some reason the owners manual was a 1998 manual- and it said the Blazer is not towable stock, but can be towed with "special equipment added". Last weekend we parked next to someone who said they towed a 2002 Blazer for years until it burned up while being towed to the campsite the very same weekend I'm talking about. The owner didn't know why it caught on fire and said he had no problems towing it for years. He said he would just start the engine, move shifter to neutral, then press and release both of the 4 wheel/2 wheel buttons in the dash at the same time and that that would put the transfer case in neutral or "freewheeling" and turn off engine and he was good to go! Anyone else doing this?
