I have one and have towed it for three years without any problems. You have to pull fuse #8 and put trans in neutral. Here is a link to a bunch if past threads on this subject.

A fulltimer pal of mine has been towing one since 2007 and is very happy with it.

I had an HHR (2009) and loved to tow it. However we move north to Ashville, NC area in summer and HHR's don't do well on state forest stone roads.
Used a Blue ox tow plate I installed myself along with the light kit.
Directions were pretty easy to follow
Directions for towing are found in the owners manual
Never new it was behind me...even without a buddy brake
Good luck

Chev hhr - Google Search
We enjoy ours as well. If you plan on exploring the back roads, it won't do that well. A jeep would perform better, if not the HHR works great and lightweight. I would highly recommend the BlueOx base plate. Don't even know it is there.
