Why are you towing on a dolly? The Chevy Colorado 4x4 is designed to tow four down with the transfer case in neutral. As for towing it with front wheels locked or unlocked, that would be a function of the dolly. Some dollies have a platform that turns and the wheels sit on that. Others don't have that platform and in that case, the wheels on the car have to be unlocked when towing. If you tow four down, the wheels have to be unlocked.

I agree with jrwitt. Why would use a dolly when you have a 4X4 with a transfer case. You have to put the transfer case in neutral to tow on a dolly.

I am concerned whenever I see anyone with a rear wheel drive using a dolly. The whole purpose of the dolly when they first came out was to use them to tow a front wheel drive vehicle. If you tow a front wheel drive vehicle you don't need to worry about whether not the tranny lubricates itself because it's not turning when it's up on the dolly. But a rear wheel drive vehicle (what the Colorado is when it's not got it's transfer case in Neutral) is not necessarily going to be fine on a dolly, as the tranny is still turning.
I hope no slick sales guy tricked the poster into thinking he could use a dolly when one isn't needed and there's essentially no advantage and lot's of potential damage...

I am off to get baseplate and SMI Stay N Play mounted this morning on my Canyon. They are also mounting the rotary battery disconnect switch. Thank you to everyone who has posted here. You have been a great help in my purchasing of the truck and the equipment to tow with. Also the pictures have been printed and going to the shop with me.

Excellent choice for braking system. SMI's customer service is fantastic, great product too. What tow bar are you using Tom?

Thanks Craig. I have the Blue Ox Aventa. Bought it 2.5 years ago and towed my Saturn with it about 26k mikes. Really like the Blue Ox system, except for the Patriot. I bought that when I had Saturn but decided against using it on the Canyon and bought the SMI system.

I test drove the Colorado today. It was a 4x4 crew cab short bed. I drive a Tundra now so it seemed small but I liked it. I was looking into towing a 2008 Hummer H3 and found that I could not use my Brake Buddy since the Hummer H3 has a electronic brake assist even when not running. Does anyone know if this holds true with the 2015-2016 Colorado or Canyon? We tow a Jeep Liberty now and use the Brake Buddy so one less thing ($1000) to buy if I don't need to upgrade it.

I have a Brake Buddy, and tow a colorado. Brakes do work on the toad , no power assist, but they are hydraulic brakes. I had a panic stop occur, and they sure worked. You DO have to disconnect the negative battery cable, see the posts earlier for a summary of the steps you need to take.

Can anybody tell me if the odometer in the 2016 Canyon (4WD, Auto) accumulates mileage when being towed?

The thought is "No" due to the battery disconnect

thanks

No. None of the vehicles that were manufactured in the last 20 years will accumlate mileage due to that data being transmitted to the ECM from the tranmission electronically. Even my first two toads, a 2000 and 2002 Saturn SL2s, accumulate the towed mileage neither does my 2010 Colorado.

What body style and engine size for the Colorado/Canyon do y'all have?

Also did you install the baseplate yourself?
