Oops heres the "t"

Sorry this may be a dumb question and I'm sure it has been answered somewhere before. When towing a vehicle four wheels down do you count the whole weight of the vehicle including tow bar as added weight to motorhome, or is it just the tongue weight? We can't seem to find an answer. We see people in gassers all the time towing what we think maybe over loading their vehicle.

Thank you-

For the purposes of axle weight, it's only the tongue weight, which is pretty negligible for a four-down tow. For the purposes of GCWR, it's the entire weight of the toad, plus everything loaded in it.

Anything from your hitch attachment point back is added as the weight you are towing (total weight). Everything that puts downward pressure on your hitch is tongue weight. As "FlyingDriver" stated, you are only adding about 20#'s of tongue weight to your coach when flat towing.

Well, my Blue Ox Aventa LX weighs more like 40lb, but it's still negligible...

Ok now I'm confused again.... So let's say I have 5000 lbs of cargo weight, vehicle is 4000 that leaves me safely with 1000 of persons, food, water etc?

Probably not. I think you're referring to 10,000lb difference between GVWR and GCWR, which is common on mid-large RVs. That's the most you can tow, assuming you're already at GVWR in the RV. The GVWR would include the cargo in the RV, plus water, food, passengers, etc.

If you're under GVWR, then you can tow more than the (GCWR-GVWR) difference, up to your hitch rating.

If you want specific advice, please post actual numbers for your GVWR, GCWR, hitch rating, and loaded weight. And the weight of your towed, as you plan to tow it.

I don't think so. I think you're confusing cargo carrying capacity with towing capacity and probably ignoring the combined gross weight rating. I'm sure no expert but I think you need to find your CGWR... deduct the weight of your fully loaded coach (including full tanks, people, food, supplies, tools, etc)... and that will tell you how much towing capacity room you have.... at least as it pertains to the CGWR.

Don't worry about tongue weight towing four down. It's not an issue. But, you do need to be able to fit the weight of your toad within what capacity you have left in the CGWR after you find out what your fully loaded coach weighs.

I'm sure your right about seeing many Class C rigs... and probably a lot of Class A gassers too... which are towing in an overloaded condition.

Best of luck.

Rick

If you are approaching weight limits you need to know that the vehicles curb weight and its actual weight are gonna be different, sometimes substantially different. The published curb weight is for a specific model with no options. The only real way to know is to run the vehicle you are buying over a scale - before you sign the paperwork.

It's in the shop again right now. I'm going to see what all the weight ratings are when it gets out. I may have one more question then. Thanks again for everyone's help. We are about to start full timing in it and we are trying to figure out if we can even bring a tow'd
