Dead battery in toad
We just towed for the first time. 2012 Cadillac SRX with Brake Buddy.
The owner's manual for a 2012 doesn't mention pulling any fuses, I checked with the dealer and they confirmed that there is no need to pull fuses on a 2012.
We did cut corners by putting it in neutral while it was running the. Shut it off rather than pull the shift boot and push a button.
I started it at a dog pee break at about 2 1/2 hours, it started fine. 2 1/2 hours later the battery was dead. Luckily Cadillac Roadside came to the RV park and jumped it for free.
Tomorrow I will pull the boot and push the button to get it in neutral. We have about 180 miles to go to our destination so I will post how it is when we arrive

It's has happened to the best of us.
Make sure head lights and parking lights are in off position.
Make sure dome light is off.
Turn radio off.
Turn blower fan off.
If possible, do not have key in accessory position when towing. Turning key
part/half way will unlock steering and keep odometer disconnected.
If your using an auxiliary tow braking system that has its' own vacume motor
for the brake pedal, check adjustment as if it sticks on and does not release,
battery will drain and break pads will wear.

Had the same issue on my HHR. Solved by taking the 12v connection on the Coach 7 pin socket and wiring it thru to the Toad and connecting it to the battery. Need power in the toad beyond the battery for the brake system. Mine is a Blue Ox setup and you can do this successfully with the stock cable with a wire from theToad connector to the battery thru an auto rest breaker.

x2 what Bob said. Just did the same thing for my Jeep. Only suggestion would be to put a fuse next to the toad battery, as a minimum. If your wiring chafes, it will short out and bad things will happen. I put them on both ends. Prolly overkill, but can't hurt.

Toad-Charge Towed Vehicle Battery Charger & Maintainer Kit - RV Power Supply
I installed one of these. In addition to charging it regulates to prevent over charging.
