Do I need the NTK or can I have my Ford flashed and I'm ready without the light?

I have a 2006 Ford explorer with a v8 4x4 I see they sell the kit for $299 through my ford dealer why can't I simply follow the proceedure and if the car rolls it's in netural?

I think you turn the key to the first position then put it into netural push on the brake for a few seconds and hit the 4x4 button and your done? Can someone verify this.

Find another dealer. My dealer charged me $39.95 for tow kit, and $165.00 to flash.

The NTK is what actually shifts the transfer case into and out of neutral. Without it, you will burn up the transmission. Had my 2004 Exploder Limited V8 recently upgrade with a neutral tow kit.

I suspect that most of that charge is for labor. The car's ECM has to be reprogrammed to activate the "neutral" feature. Most folks other than the ford dealer lack the tools to do the programming. On some models the NTK is just an led than goes under the dash. Your model is more difficult. In addition to the led a switch has to be installed in the console which requires disassembly. PM me with your email address and I'll send you a copy of the Ford instruction sheet so you can see what is involved.

Well I'm done I installed $20. Worth of parts and had ford flash it for $67. So total $87. Total for something ford wanted $450. For parts and labor. It looks great and works great.

Now moving onto the blue ox bracket for the ford wish I could save on that but it looks like $920. Installed with lights and battery charge connection.
