Dollies not permitted?

Using a dolly IS LEGAL all across Canada.
I towed a dolly with my truck/camper from
BC to the Maritimes. Many times I had police
pass me and each time they did I felt secure that
everything was working OK behind me.

I suggest you run away from a dealer that tells you lies and spreads false rumors and let them know the reason you are running. After all how can you believe anything they say after telling you a lie, or telling you something that is false without having validated it to be true.

The statement about dollies not being allowed in Canada is 100% false as other posters have noted. Suffice to say they are allowed but depending on weight factors brakes may be required.

I believe NJ has some dolly restrictions, but this is subject to validation so there might be something to the "some state limitation" comment. But I have never heard of anyone being cited for just towing with a dolly.

While I now tow 4 down after a bad experience with a Dolly, there are good reasons for using a dolly also. Just not my choice.

Good luck. You should be fine with your VW on a dolly.

Dolly's are a pain, 4 down is the best, I pull a 1999 Jeep Cherokee sport, easy to hook and unhook, good Luck

Even if so.... He SURLY makes more money on tow bars and the install on a toad!!!! As many have said.. RUN!! No telling WHAT else he has or will tell you!!

All I can say is the salesman lips were moving and he was not speaking a truth.

I would suggest getting a dolly with either electric or surge brakes.

Check this site for as current as I can find for the states road rules. There may have been some changes but this is as close as I can get for having the info in one spot for quick access.

New York does state "Motorhomes and trailers are NOT permitted on the Taconic State Parkway. Trailers are not permitted on most parkways." I thought I had seen on one state that they did not allow dolly's but I cannot find it now. Found it ... New Jersey "New Jersey Turnpike: Motorhome may tow vehicle as long as all four wheels are on the ground; no tow dollies or piggybacks."

It's not uncommon for some roads to restrict vehicles. I wouldn't use the NJ Turnpike anyway, there's FREE I-295 running next to it the whole length. Fact is, NO state or Canadian Provinces ban dollies, some restrict use on certain roads. You also have to be aware of height, length, weight restrictions on roads, but it's not a trip breaker!!

We tow 4-down, but what I have learned is my next configuration is going to be an enclosed trailer. We purposely purchased a little crap-box Ford Fiesta just to tow - it is one of the few "automatics" that can be towed 4-down without mods (it is actually a manual with an electric-shift transmission). The DW cannot drive a standard. Towing anything in the wind behind a motorhome is a bad idea for the finish of the towed vehicle. That very large,flat front end punching holes through the air causes quite a low-pressure area at the very back of the motorhome, causing every little rock, pebble, piece of road detritus to be picked up and unceremoniously dropped on the towed. We quickly learned to check road reports and avoid construction areas if possible, and now absolutely avoid fresh chip seal (almost impossible to avoid, unfortunately - it is everywhere in the summer months). Glad we haul the Fiesta - we only ruined a relatively inexpensive car over the past year. 10k miles, and the car looks 15 years old. Had to replace the air conditioning condenser last summer after a trip to the Northwest Territories (warranty denied - dealer claimed it looked "like we had run the Baha 500 with it"). The paint and plastic on the front end is chipped and pitted (we put a home-made windshield cover made of a rubber mat on, so the windshield has survived), and even the front wheels and mirror housings are trashed. Do not open-tow any vehicle that you find valuable, unless you stick to clean interstates.

Most states don't consider the dolly a vehicle and don't register them. They are considered just like a tow bar and don't even require brakes unless a certain weight is exceeded
