Dolly Towing

I just purchased a new vehicle that must be dolly towed. I have no idea what is required to decide which is the recommend type and models, type of braking system etc. I have a 2016 Honda CR-V Touring. Please help.

Is the CRV AWD or FWD? I don't believe an AWD CRV can be dolly towed. My Master Tow dolly has surge brakes. Nothing to add to the MH for braking. Some dollies don't come with safety cables/chains from the dolly to the car. Make sure yours has them.

All CR-V's up till '15's can be towed 4 down whether AWD or front wheel drive.
We've towed our '05 Odyssey both 4 down and on our KK-460 dolly. Galvanixed steel, surge brakes and I think the new ones have disk brakes.

There are lots of opinions on this subject and you need to do some basic research based on your toad and motor home. Does your steering lock when you turn the car off? Does your motor home have wiring for an electric brake controller? Those questions will make some dollies more suitable than others and give you braking options.

If it's AWD then you can't use a dolly. If not, does the steering lock?

This is not an issue that is subject to "opinions." This is an issue that is controlled by FACTS. The only true and correct answer here is what it says in the owners manual for the towed vehicle. That's where the facts about this will be found.

Thank you for the replay Rich, but I was talking about choosing a dolly and not speaking to the fact that the '16 CRV is or is not flat towable. It seemed to me that the OP was pretty sure on that issue and was asking for help selecting a dolly. If you will re-read my post I was asking questions about what happens to the car when the ignition is turned off and what kind of trailer controller the coach has. Neither question is germane to the whether the CRV is flat towable or not.

And the simple answer to what type is that if the steering locks then one has a bit less hassle with a dolly that has a swivel pan or steerable axle.

We have the dolly that Camping World sells paid around $1500. It has electric drum brakes easy lube bearings and plastic fenders. We use it to tow our front wheel drive auto trans Camry Solara. We have used it to tow over 10,000 miles without a problem. The tires seem to be wearing evenly and I have no complaints about the dolly. We had to buy the patch cord to hook up our prodigy P3 controller to the chassis and it was otherwise all plug and play. There is a nicer dolly on the market that folds up for storage but it was quite a bit more expensive. We are retired and could not afford a new vehicle/hook-up to flat tow so this was the best alternative for us. Only drawbacks so far as with all dolly's you can't back up even a little bit.
