Dolly towing Jeep Wrangler 4x4
Due to the # of grand kids going on a vacation with us, I investigated the use of our Demco dolly to transport the Jeep Wrangler rather than the Mini Cooper which is the normal vehicle. While a Jeep can be towed "4 down" it is recommended that it not be towed on a dolly. With the transfer case in neutral and the trans. in either neutral or park, why does it matter if only the rear wheels turn?

Although placing the transfer case in neutral will disconnect it from the engine, there must be an issue with the rear driveshaft turning and the front driveshaft not turning.
In some transfer cases, this can lead to overheating and damage with only one driveshaft turning.

Don't know why it's not recommended, but it is not.
It isn't hard to remove the front driveshaft, and it is perfectly safe and reasonable to drive the jeep without it. Remove it before you leave, leave it off until you return, and use your dolly.

Spend the money and do it right. You'll land up spending more to fix it later if you don't.

Hmm, not sure why. Could it be the uphill angle placed on the TCase by the dolly isn't good for lubrication? Seems like a stretch but I can't think of any reason.

I'd guess that the transfer case isn't designed to have the front and rear axles going at significantly different speeds. Probably a lubrication issue. I don't think removing the front driveshaft is going to help, because the gears inside the transfer case will still be stationary.
I wouldn't use a dolly for anything other than a FWD vehicle.

THat would still not fix the front shaft stationary/ rear shaft turning problem.
I'd unbolt the rear drive shaft from the axle and hang it up .
THen you could tow it on dolly as far as you want.

Is this the one and only time you'll be taking the grandkids with you?
I agree with the suggestion to just bite the bullet, get the Jeep set up for proper flat towing.
