eze tow dolly HELP!!

I recently purchased an EZE TOW DOLLY and have to say that the workmanship, design, handling and operation are all superb. I was more than pleasantly surprised by the dolly when I picked it up.

But I do have one problem. I can't keep my car on the dolly!

After driving 50 or so miles the car tends to migrate toward the rear. It doesn't matter how tight I have the straps, it just seems to slowly slide toward the rear.

The trans in in park.

The steering is unlocked.

The straps are installed as directed by the company.

Does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong?

You do not need to have the steering unlocked. The dolly has a pivot in the tray and no need to leave steering wheel unlocked. That might be the problem.

I would suggest taking dolly to a welding shop and have angle iron "chocks" installed to help hold car in place. I did on a dolly I sold, worked great.

GREGOK80 - this type of dolly does not have a pivot and relies on the car steering to do that job so it MUST be left unlocked.

STINK - I have come to the same conclusion but I can't be the ONLY person having this problem. If I am, then it has to be something that I am not doing right. Right?

We have a EZE tow, and you are not alone. We towed a Solara, with 17" low profile tires, which took up most of the wheel well, and that made it very hard to get the factory straps around securely, and keep tight.
We even had a strap come completely loose on the way to Vegas, just shortly after the checking straps at a rest stop. We bought new basket type straps at Camping World,
We swapped the ratchet straps, and that worked much better.
What are you driving? Could be more the car than the dolly.

I have had my EZE Tow for almost a year and the straps will streach for a while. My first trip I stopped about every 100 miles and retightened them. After about the fourth time, I haven't had any mome problems.

We swapped the ratchet straps, and that worked much better." Can you tell me what the difference is between the straps you bought and the ones that came with the dolly?

Hi 'budtee'. I thought that the straps were stretching a little but did yours stretch enough to allow the tire to move backwards about five inches? (I nearly had a heart attack!! ) We are towing a 2013 Chev Equinox with 17 inch tires.

At least one full wrap around the winch before the straps start to snug up? Not enough wraps and they can slip.

If the image shows up, you can see, rather than draping across the tire, it has a basket so to speak, with it's own clamp you can tighten, along with the ratchet strap. We used only one of the hook straps. We had a problem of our car jumping back when we released the ratchet, the top clamp made releasing the straps much easier, and safer as well. PLUS, with our adventure in Vegas, we gain a greater appreciation of safety chains!

The straps that come with the EZE-TOW have a double basket that drapes over the tire, two straps with hooks for the rear of the tire and a loop of strap that goes around the tire back through a steel ring and then down to the ratchet.

While the instructions and the video at the EZE-TOW web site show the basket straps at the 10 o'clock and the 2 o'clock position, I am wondering it the front basket strap should be at the 12 o'clock position and the rear strap closer to the 9 o'clock position. Wouldn't this stop the tire from moving rearward and eliminate any play that might be introduced if the 2 o'clock strap became loose as the tire moved away from it?

Does this make any sense to anyone? My head is beginning to hurt!!

i have a stehl dolly with a swiveling plate that the car sits on. i lock the steering wheel and leave the manual transmission in gear. i use safety chains from the dolly to the cars towing lugs.
my tiedown ratchet straps crank from the front of the tire. i retighten the straps every day after driving a few miles. after that, the straps stay tight.
i still check the straps every time i stop.

I had a dolly for four years and had all the problems that you are having. Loose straps, straps fell off, trouble loading, pia to store. Did every thing I could think of to solve problems. Some people love their dolly's but I gave up and went fours wheels down.

Yes, the first time out the straps streached a lot. I tried putting the 2 cross straps at positions other than what EZE Tow said. That made matters worse. After getting the streach out of the straps I have not had any problems.
