F150 a good TOAD?
Hi all, We're looking to have an F150 as a TOAD. Have you any words of wisdom for us? Is an F150 a good TOAD?

F150 a good TOAD?
We are just doing our research on buying a F150 as a toad to replace our aging Jeep Gr Cherokee.
The 2014 and newer 4x4 have the ability to tow 4 down by putting shifter in neutral and the transfer case in neutral. The key has to be left in the first position but not energized or the F150 models with push button start do not need the key left in the truck.
I like the idea of not pulling fuses, not disconnecting battery cables. The F150 passes these tests. It will be heavier than my Gr Cherokee.
I will be following this thread to listen to current F150 toad owners.
Brian

Hi Brian. I tow a 2014 F150 4x4 platinum super crew. VERY easy to tow but it is a little heavy. I tracks very well behind the coach.
I use the Airforce one braking system with the blue ox base plate and tow bar.
Happy with the setup.

Negatives: Big, heavy. Especially if you are using it to carry other toys.
Positives: all the utility available

Regarding weights - curb weight for the 2016 F150 4x4 super crew ecoboost is about 4900lbs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is 5000lbs with the V6, 5400lbs for the ecodiesel.
Hard to believe the F150 is lighter than my Grand Cherokee ecodiesel option.
I also looked at the Ram 1500 4x4 ecodiesel but curb weight is close to 6100lbs.
My existing 2007 GC Hemi Ltd is 4719lbs.

Actually, it's the 2012 F-150 4x4s and up that have been configured for flat towing. The procedure for towing really doesn't need to be listed as it's all in the owners manual. And, as far as weight is concerned, unless you're towing them with a gas coach, it's not a bid deal. A Jeep four door, JKU is not all that far from an F-150 in weight and a zillion folks tow those. About 99.99% of the D/Ps out there will not know the difference.
It's all good. The better part of towing an F-150 is that you can haul more in it while towing, i.e. Motorcycles, quads, side-by-sides, smaller golf carts etc. When we tow our '11 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 Extended cab, we also haul a GL 1800 Goldwing in the back of it. We can't do that when we tow the '15 JKUR we just purchased.

I'm towing a jeep now, but would switch to an F150 in a heartbeat. I have a couple of buddies who tow either the F150 or Silverado and they to every bit as well as my Jeep.
I would certainly equip it with tow brakes. I personally prefer the M&G system.

The F150 has been an excellent toad for us. Ford switched the F150 to aluminum in 2015 which saved about 700#. It is very easy to put it into flat-tow mode, and has been tremendously useful for hauling all sorts of stuff. We routinely load our 900# motorcycle into the bed to bring along with us on our travels.
We use the SMI Air Force One with Blue Ox baseplate and Avail towbar. I also have a toad brake light notification LED mounted on the coach dashboard - this is wired to the cold side of the toad's brake light switch so I can tell when the F150's brake pedal is actuated.

We've been towing a 2015 F150 for a little over a year now. The Blue Ox base plate went on pretty easily. I also installed a M&G brake . As stated, it's a simple setup.... just toggle the 4x4 switch 5 times and you are good to go.

Thank you for your input. Can you tell us about the "toggle 5 times" procedure? Is that something from a Ford manual or a M&G manual?

It's from the Ford manual. On the dash board is a rotary switch that allows you to go from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive. The procedure is to turn the ignition on,press the brake pedal, put transmission in neutral, rotate the switch from 2H to 4L and back 5 times within 7 seconds. At that point the transfer case shifts into neutral and the information display panel displays a message that Neutral Tow is Enabled. Turn the ignition off at that point.
For the M&G hook-up, just plug in the air line from the coach to the connector on the toad and hook up the breakaway cable.

We also tow a 2013 F150 4X4 CC with M&G brake system and Roadmaster brackets with Blue Ox 10,000 tow bar and a charge line from coach. Good toad and easy set up.

We were towing our 2013 F-150 and had no issues. Traded in th 13 for a 16 and need a different base plate. Now the 13 baseplate is for sale and have to get a 16 from demco. F-150 is a piece of cake to tow.

What are you all using for your tail Lights? Are you buying the wiring kit or using the wireless aftermarket LED taillight?
