I agree with your point about it being unlikely that there would be any issue with the bushings since they are at the low point in the case. And, modifying the shift gate for 2wd neutral sounds like the best way to go---would there be any likelihood of the shift lever inadvertently slipping into 4wd high as the cruiser bounces down the road with that mod?

The trans is an SM 465 using an Advance Adaptor to the transfer case and it can be separated at that point although I don't wan't to even contemplate that. I have to tow it tomorrow and will use 2wd until I get time to modify the shift gate.

I don't see how it could accidentally pop into 4wd as I would think the effort required to move from 2wd neutral to 4wd neutral would be the same as moving from 2wd high to 4wd high and I've never had a problem with that happening.

I did a quick search on the Muncie trans and really didn't find anything. Good choice though as granny 1st and four gears is a nice upgrade over the factory 3 speed.

Confusion, sounds ok to me so I'll do the mod when I have time. Thanks again.

I owned a '70 FJ55 and a "76 FJ55 and with the '70,you could free wheel it with the hubs out, tranny in neutral and transfer case in neutral. With mine you had to pull a lever out to go into lo range and it was a three speed on the column and I drove it for 16 years and 250,000 untill my #2 son rolled it and we were able to drive it home.TOTALLED...Could have shot him and the '76 just wasn't the same beast as the '70.

Thanks for the info. I think you are right that the '70 could be free-wheeled because of the way they were set up. You could get the trans and transfer case in neutral (2wd neutral!) which made it easier to tow. I am going to have modify the one-lever shifter so that the transfer case can be put in 2wd neutral like the earlier ones could.

I have had this since new and it has been bulletproof with the exception that my number 2 son also rolled it when he was in high-school and it took several years to fix--but, it still would run after being rolled!
