Flat Tow

Hello All, I am not sure which vehicle we should set up to tow behind our motorhome, our jeep grand cherokee (4x4) or my 2103 Ram 3500 diesel 4x4. I think the ram would be nice because we can put toys in the bed like a golf cart or harley but besides fuel economy is there any drawbacks to to towing this vs the jeep? I think the ram has tow bars on the front already frame mounted & not sure if they can be utilized with a tow bar. The jeep would need a complete tow system & brake controller also. Just seeing what would be the easiest to set up.

Hello, if you set your Jeep up, you will be in the same place as me, can't take the Harley's/golf cart.......I am looking into a enclosed trailer now after setting my JK for flat tow, I will still use the flat tow most of the time, trailer for vacations. I would setup your truck, if you are wanting to take other toys also.........

What is the MH? Tow capacities and such? Does the Ram 3500 plus toys exceed?

I am not sure of the weight of the ram but it is a dually, does that pose any issues on its width? I would think the MH is capable of towing either one with

By looking at the numbers http://thormotorcoach.com/media/docu...er-10-2012.pdf If you are up to your GVWR(44,600) the Coach can tow 10,000#. The thing to do is get her weighed and see what it weighs loaded, ready to roll, then subtract that number from the GCWR(54,600) listed in the chart, now you will know just what you can tow. So if your Coach loaded only weighs in at 42,600, you could tow 12,000#.

I did not see where Thor listed the vehicle unladen weight.....it is most likely on the sticker/plaque in your Coach somewhere. It should list all the weights on it.

I think it's the "hitch rating" that limits the mh's towing capacity. Could be wrong.

With the 10K tow limit, towing the Ram shouldn't be a problem, but if you put a golf cart or HD in the back, that may add up to be more than 10K. The Ram may have tow "hook" on the front, but there aren't any tow bars that will connect to them. You'll probably need to replace the hooks with a base plate that the tow bar can connect to. You'll also need a brake system installed (not just a controller).

Good luck..

Ron
