Flat towing 2012 Chevy Equinox - Miles Adding UP

We just bought a new 2012 Chevy Equinox & have flat towed from TX to San Diego & all the miles are on the car's odometer. I called Chevy yesterday & the guy I spoke with wasn't particularly knowledgeable, but did some checking & came back & said there was no way to avoid that except use a dolly, which we don't want to do since we bought this to flat tow.

I sure hate to think about using up my whole warranty on a car I'm not even driving that much.

Anyone have any experience with this.

Thanks

My father pulled a mid 2000 Malibu behind his class A, and he had a switch that he flipped and would shut off the speedometer. Since the Sppedometers are electric now, I would guess that he tied into one of the wires leading to the speedometer and broke the circuit with the switch. Hope this helps you.

There should be a fuse you can pull. A wiring diagram should be easy to find for that unit.

I pulled the fuse on my 2012 Equinox as the owners manual tells you, I didn't register any miles on my last trip of 2500 miles.

this is great new as I plan to tow a 2012 MKZ and sure do not want the miles towed to accumulate, BUT could this not be used then to keep the miles down when driving the car itsself?

Probably not, because it also makes other things not work when you pull that fuse.

We unhook the battery on our Acadia (per towing instructions) and the odometer does not register the mileage.

Funny thing is, we had a battery cut off installed. As we started adding the miles,we've realized that it is only adding some of the miles. We're going to have to watch this more carefully. The miles don't add up to the whole trip we've towed it, but they certainly are more than we've driven it.

Are you physically disconnecting the battery or pulling the fuse per the Recreational Towing instructions in the owner manual? I suggest following the procedure in the manual...

2011 auto, 2 wheel drive, 4 cyl. racks up no mileage while being flat towed. Have just followed the Mfg. instructions for rec. veh. towing. One fuse is pulled which I have since put a switch on.

Our 2010 Acadia manual says pull a fuse - I installed a switch to make it very easy to do - and the miles towed do not appear on the odometer.

We almost bought the Equinox and specifically downloaded the manual. It says what fuses etc to pull for recreational towing. Page 10-78 and 79 have the specifics. We actually ended up buying the Ford edge. No fuses to fool with.

We haven't pulled the fuse, but did have a battery disconnect installed. since that company screwed up the install for our surge brake, they may have screwed that up too. Will pull the fuse & see what happens.
