Flat towing a 1998 BMW Z3...

Let me begin by saying that I know they say not to do itů But, I'm probably going to try it anyway. I haven't found the base plate and I'm thinking that we will probably have to modify one, but I'm sure that it can be done. This car is a 5 speed manual tranny, but "supposedly" because of the way it lubes, it doesn't like to be towed flat.

I would be going with the Miata, but the "big guy" can't quite squeeze himself into that tiny little space (but it sure makes for good entertainment watching him try). It is for that reason (all 6' 4" of it) that I am limited on the type of "sports car" I can tow. He fits nicely in the Z3 so that is what I'm leaning toward.

Anyone have any experience towing one? Or know of anyone who has? I'm looking at a lube pump and maybe a Remco disconnect. Seems kind of strange to me that you would use a disconnect on a manual tranny though. Thanks in advance!

I tow a 97 Z3 on a tow dolly without any problems. When researching whether it was possible , the best info I could find was that the 5 speeds were ok to tow but the autos and 6 speeds were not. I haven't put many miles on it towing and have recently purchased a 2012 Wrangler to tow four down. If the 5 speeds are ok to tow on a dolly, they should be ok to tow 4 down if you can fab some kind of base plate.
