Flat towing a 2016 Smart Fortwo

Does anyone have information on the ability to flat tow the 2016 Smarty? And if there are face plates available. Not sure it will be possible with the new double clutch. We test drove a new one and it is a big step up from the old model.

The new 2016 smart car engine will be upgraded to an even more powerful 0.9L TURBO 3-cylinder engine, which will develop 89 horsepower and 100 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2016 smart car will have an estimated top speed of 96 mph. The more powerful engine will also develop additional torque at lower rpms than the engine it is replacing.

The 2016 smart fortwo has the new Twinamic transmission. The previous generation single clutch automated transmission will be retired and replaced by a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission known as the 'Twinamic.' This transmission is manufactured by Getrag, well known for building transmissions and gearboxes for all motor vehicles. Getrag is also known as one of the best engineers of dual-clutch self-shifting (automated) gearboxes for numerous vehicles especially including high-end sports cars.
The faster-shifting transmission in the 2016 smart fortwo with an additional gear will result in improved acceleration responsiveness, improved fuel economy, and higher top speed. I also expect the 2016 smart fortwo transmission to have very little maintenance requirements, as proven in various other dual-clutch transmission varieties offered by Getrag.

The 2016 smart car will also offer a 5-speed manual transmission as an option. So for those wanting to drive the 2016 smart fortwo with a tried and true manual transmission, it will be a welcome option. The new 2016 smart fortwo will please drivers wanting more involvement in their smart car driving experience, allowing driving techniques such as heel-and-toe shifting in the 2016 smart car.

Good morning. Consider asking on the American or Canadian Smart car forums.

I think it's a good idea to give credit to the source of the writeup below. It did not originate from Triker56's own ideas, but rather it was written by smart center West Covina's Brand Manager, Kamaal Peterson.

2016 smart fortwo - Introduction, Preview, Information, Specifications, and Options

In any case, the new generation (smart 453) smart fortwo is no longer equipped with a single-clutch automated manual like its predecessor. It is now equipped with a more advanced, more sophisticated dual-clutch transmission known as the "Twinamic" transmission. It generally shifts faster than manual transmissions operated by human beings, it shifts more quickly than a typical automatic transmission, and is definitely a faster gearbox than the single-clutch automated manual of its predecessor.

As such, due to its new dual-clutch complexity, smart USA and Mercedes-Benz has recommended against flat-towing the new smart car. There may possibly be a release of information about how to properly flat tow the new smart fortwo, but until the new 2016 smart fortwo should be towed on a flatbed trailer or towing dolly if necessary.

It is my understanding that the new transmission made the Smart not towable. Verify that with the owner manual and/or dealer or Mercedes.

You are correct. There is consideration at the moment to release a set of instructions on flat towing the new redesigned 2016 smart fortwo, but due to the added complexity of the dual-clutch transmission there is fear that there will be somebody who manages to not follow the instructions, damage their transmissions, and try to force a warranty claim through pressure, arbitration, etc,.

I hope MB/smart loosens up and releases the instructions so that those of us willing to flat tow the car can do it. There's not a better candidate for RV towing than a smart car in my opinion.

By the way, www.smartcenterwestcovina.com is where the information for this thread comes from.

Exclamation

I just found out that smart will be releasing a set of instructions about flat towing the 2017 smart fortwo models (and should work with the 2016's as well). They are going to be flat-tow capable!

Good news!
