flat towing jeep

I plan on towing a 2010 jeep wangler unlimited 4 weel drive ,automatic . In the owners manual they state to remove the negative terminal off the battery. Does anyone know what this is for. If its to keep from draining the battery then adding a 12 V feed from the coach would take care of this. It might be because you have to turn the ignition switch to ACC which would power up the radio. Just trying to figure out away of having to remove the lead.

Thanks
Steve

Hello Steve yea I tow the same thing and I just put a charge wire to the battery so it does not drain my jeep battery , and also I use a brake buddy and need it to keep the jeep charged

Why would you need to turn the ACC switch on? I believe your Wrangler steering wheel does not lock which is the only reason to use the ACC ignition switch position.

On my 2013 Wrangler Unlimited it was not necessary to turn the ignition to ACC.

I had an 08 jeep liberty and now a 12 liberty - I turn key on put in neutral press the neutral button - two clicks and back in park shut kee off and lock it up. no streering wheel lock so all is good without pulling fuse's or charge wire.

My impression was that if you have lock steering the key needs to be on to allow the front wheels to turn. This could drain the battery so disconnecting it would prevent that. Our 2015 does not have a steering wheel lock so the key gets removed. On our old toad we took off the negative lead. If you have a braking device that needs 12V then depending on where you get the 12V you may need to leave the key on but a feed from the MH would be better. We have a Ready Brake so no power is necessary.

Thanks for all of your replays. I was just going by the owners manual which states to turn the key to The ACC position. I agree with it does not have the steering wheel lock. With this jeep being used by me as a toad I didn''t want to mess up anything. I had bought a 2015 Silverado and on that you must remove the negative lead off the battery. Dealer says that has something to do with all of electronic and the transmission. I just think they are covering their butt.

Steve,
You need to do what ever makes you comfortable. I will tell you that I towed my Wrangler Unlimited over 10k miles with the ignition off. I also use a Brake Buddy without a charging line from the coach and have never had a battery drain issue.

Good luck!

The Jeep owners manual has been in need of updating, as regards flat towing, since sometime in '08.

No need to disconnect the battery (as I did on our '07). The key will be in your pocket, not in the ignition.
