Can a 2017 Ford Explorer 4wd be towed 4 down? If so is there anything special that has to be done?

According to Remco, it can. Look in the owners manual to verify.

I am currently towing a 2017 Explorer XLT 4 down. According to the manufacturer you should dicontect the negative side of the battery for towing. The reason being that the new Explorers and Edges have so many new modules on them that the battery will discharge, even with a charge line, and then you will have all kinds of concerns with the electrics. I have installed a separate 12 volt plug which is spliced into the charge line for my brake buddy. I do not disconnect the battery but stop every 3-4 hours and run the engine for a few minutes to boost the battery, a pain but it works. You can't use the plug ins in the caras they shut off after 75 mins if the engine is not running. The car is easy to tow but I would probably had second thoughts on my new toadhad I known about this beforehand. The installers of my tow system are going to revisit the problem on my return as I am currently traveling coast to coast across Canada. The issue is getting enough Amos through the charge line from the coach. Camping World Bellingham WA told me that they install a shut off switch in the negative line and install a separate plugin before the shut off. Ford says you have to restart the car within 15 mins of re-energizing the battery.

Hope this helps

I don't know if this is relevant but I tow a 2011 explorer and all I did is install a charge line to the battery with a breaker on both ends in case there is some sort of short so either battery wouldn't start a fire . And make sure the climate system is off and intertainment system is off put it in neutral and go. Works great no dead batteries yet.
