It depends on which 4WD transfer case you have. The F150 4x4 with a manual transfer case has always been towable, whereas the Electronic "shift on the fly" transfer case was not. This is clearly stated in the 2010 Ford Towing Guide under "Four wheel down towing".

The change for 2012 is that all 4x4 F150's can now be towed four-down.

Yep... electronic here... but that hasn't stopped me from trying to figure out the differences between mine and the 2012 (which is also electronic) and make mine towable. Yeah, I know...

but how different can it be??? Can't I change out the transfer case to a 2012 version??? Ford isn't helpful and the Dealer says it is completely different and can't be done. I'm not convinced. Now... where's that wall again?

i would ask another dealer or call the 800 line and be persistent

Ok, so I have now made several trips towing my 2012 Ford F150 SuperCrew with my 350 Cat. They're have been no problems towing it. I have been able to make it up steep long climbs with no overheating problems with outside temps over 100.

The truck is heavier than the Jeep I towed. On steep hills I can feel a slight difference but have had no problem doing so. All and all I am very happy with F150 as a tow vehicle. Very easy to put F150 into a towed position. Would recommend if you have the power in you motorhome to tow it.

I'm really happy to read this. It's nearing time to upgrade my toad, and I've been disappointed to learn that F150 was non-towable when I began looking into it. I refuse to buy a government motors product.

I'll wait a couple of years and catch a nice 2 yr old F150 that I can tow with no problems.

JCMCCULLOUGH,

I too am happy to read your report on flat towing the F150. I have a Wrangler Unlimited (4 dr) that I am considering changing out for the F150. The Wrangler serves as my every day driver and I don't care for it that much. It does well as a dingy.

Question 1 - Do you use a brake system on the F150? If so, which one?
Question 2 - Do you use the vehicle's lights for brake and turn signaling? If so, did you get someone to wire it in? If you do not use the vehicle's lights, did you add supplemental (magnetic) lights?
Question 3 - What type of Jeep was it that you towed prior to the F150? I'm curious about the weight difference from my Wrangler to the F150.

No I am not using a added breaking system on my F150 at this time.

I wired my own turning/brake lights seperate from my truck. Drilled into the tail lights and added lights. They only come on when the connected towing vehicle applies them. It looks totally stock and all wires are concealed. Not very hard to do. You will need to run a ground wire from frame of truck to the lighting system.

The prior vehicle I used was a 2007 two door Jeep Rubicon.

Ive been towing my 2012 f150 crew cab 4x4 with eco boost for a few months now. Works great. Really dont even feel it back there. 2008 Monaco Diplomat 400hp.

Use Ready Brute tow bar with the surge brake option. Tied brake/turn lights directly to f150 wiring and added a 12v feed to keep the f150 battery charged.

Looking at towing a 2013 Ford F150 2wd. It is my understanding there is a drive shift disconnect that can be installed to make it towable? Anyone know of or use this?

The transfer cases are different between yours and the newer ones that can be flat towed. There is a specific position in the shifting mechanism in the newer transfer cases that can allow for a complete disconnect from the transmission. The 4x4 module would need to be changed out and the body control module would need the appropriete programming. Since all modules are coded specific to each truck through as-built data, this would not be an easy task.
