Ford Fiesta towing per manual
We tow a 2014 Ford Fiesta S with manual transmission four down. Ford user manual says to put ignition switch in accessory position. Some how I missed that instruction and we have been towing for over 20,000 with ignition off and no apparent problem. Anybody have any idea why accessory switch is supposed to be on?

The reason Ranger Smith gave is the correct one, even though it may not apply to your particular vehicle. Probably just an instruction carried over from another vehicle or another Fiesta configuration. They don't start from scratch or produce a separate manual for every possible variation of a car (auto, manual, different engine/tranny, etc). Sadly, it is not unusual to have inaccurate info in the owner manual.
The good news is it doesn't hurt anything.

I think you need to turn it to ACC to get it into neutral to tow. They just don't tell you to turn it to OFF. If you leave it in ACC you may find you have a dead battery when you stop.

This is a manual transmission so this doesn't apply.

On my Yaris I have to leave it on ACC for the auxiliary brake to work when plugged into the 12v. (And there is a steering wheel lock on the Yaris manual trans. also)
Your 12v may be hot without the ACC on.
