Front tire wear on CRV toad
Hi forum,
We just returned from a 3300 mile trip, towing our 2014 Honda CRV four down behind our MH. I noticed significant tire wear on the front tires of the toad, so that now the tread wear indicators are almost there.
We towed our old Saturn wagon probably 30,000 miles over a number of years and never had this problem. The only thing I can think of is that our tow bar (a Roadmaster Sterling) has an arm that is binding some. Think that's enough to cause the tire wear?
Thanks,
Curt

Do you see any scuffing or conical shaped tearing at the outside edge of the tires?

I seriously doubt the tow bar would cause tire wear since the tow bar should lock in position for towing anyway. It sounds like one of two things, either your front end needs alignment or your steering is not releasing allowing the front wheels to turn and scuff sideways when you turn.

We tow with a Roadmaster Sterling also. It's not your bars as if one or the other were "binding, the attachment points/hardware would go first.
As another pointed out, sounds like maybe your steering is locked, not allowing your CRV's steering to turn with the rv.

I've used a Sterling for 80,000 miles with three different cars. It's not the problem.
As Dan and Steve said...Either you car needs an alignment or your steering wheel is locked.
I can actually see in the rear view mirror my car front tires turn if I make a sharp turn with the coach. And I do check that at the start of the day, every day.
As far as your tow bar binding...I use WD40 to clean mine a couple times a year. However, once the arms are extended they should lock in place.
If they don't then you have a problem.

We have towed our 2014 CR-V for >20k miles and haven't experienced any abnormal tire wear. In fact, with ~42,000 miles on the vehicle, I've yet to have the alignment checked because it tracks straight and all four tires are wearing perfectly. We have a ReadyBrute tow bar connected to a Blue Ox baseplate on the CR-V.
I agree with the previous posts that it sounds as if you have an alignment issue. I'm sure you put the ignition switch in the ACC position which releases the steering wheel lock so that wouldn't be the problem.

Thanks for the responses. As far as the alignment goes, while I haven't had it checked, it goes down the road straight and true, hands off. I just went out and went thru the pre drive steps as written in the owners manual, and when the key is left in the "I" position, the steering wheel turns freely. The tires weren't wearing abnormally before we started the trip, and the edges look fine... Just normal looking rapid wear.
Stumped.

Have the Sterling towbar. Have towed our '05 Ody for 30,000 miles or so. Have not seen any extra tire wear at all.

If tire tread wear looks absolutely normal, but just worn out, I would suspect that your brake setup is set too sensitive (comes on too easily) and brakes too hard when it does come on.
That will take your front tires out first because the proportioning valve is set up to brake the front tires harder because of the weight being thrown forward during normal operation. With it's movement being controlled with a hitch, the vehicle doesn't get the same weight being thrown forward action that it does when operated solo.

What is the tire pressure set to on the toad tires?
I use an IR gun and shoot my tires every time I stop. That will pick up any abnormalities such as brakes dragging, low tire pressure, etc.

I'm thinking that maybe we had the braking sensitivity set too low, as suggested by alank, and combined with some really hilly, windy roads we wound up on, made the tires wear so much. Live and learn I guess. Some of our roads were particularly tough drives, and that couldn't have been good for the tires. I know it wasn't good for the driver!
Thanks everyone,
Curt

Curtster, You didn't exactly say it, but may be what you were thinking, the sensitivity adjustment isn't as important as the brake pedal pressure adjustment is. I'd ease off the brake pedal pressure some.
When I do normal easy stop n go driving, as I ease up to a stop sign after the toad brakes have applied, I like to feel a little "bump" in the coach as all the slack is taken up in the hitch joints when the toad brakes release. That way I know the brake controller is applying enough pressure to stop the weight of the toad with it's own brakes.
You start the pressure adjustment low, without feeling that "bump" and gradually increase the brake pressure until you get that little "bump".

Have your ball joints and steering alignment checked as soon as possible. I speak from personal experience with my toad. Even if one ball joint is bad it will cause both front tires to wear while pulling. I have a Falcon II tow bar and one of arms is binding a little but has not affected my tire wear.

The Honda has only about 20,000 miles on it... Could they be bad already?
Thanks,
Curt
