Full Mud Flap using with Protec-A-Tow
I just ordered a Protec-A-Tow and have been looking around about Mud Flaps. There seems to be a lot of people who feel they throw up rocks onto the hood of your car. I'm wondering if I should take mine off now that I have the Protec-A-Tow or the other thing I'm questioning is can it be too low to the ground and if I wanted to cut it off what would I use to cut it. I think mine looks like it's only 2 inches off the ground.

Your full-width mud flap should be no lower than 4" from the ground while on hard level pavement, with-if you have them, air bags fully inflated.
I have seen some run without the mud flap, those folks use protect-a-tow or a Blue Ox full-frontal shield.

I use the Protect-A-Tow with the solid rubber UltraGuard flap on the back of the MH. The flap is 4" from the road. We have never had ANY damage to the toad! Works for me!

Hi Windsurferlady,
Ray is absolutely right. Your rear mud flap needs to be at least 4" off the ground to keep from throwing rocks when traveling on loose gravel or through work zones.
You also want to first make sure you have good mud flaps in the fender wells behind the dually tires. These will catch the majority of the rocks. They need to be at least as wide as the tires, and sit about 4-5" off the ground when moving down the road. If you have a class C, the mud flaps should be left at 6" above the ground in case you back up against parking guards or curbs.
If you only have simple rubber, any box cutter, blade style knife will work fairly easily. If you have the reinforced, thick rubber, you use the same knife, but it will take several passes to get through that rubber.
If you are looking to buy a mud flap on the rear, do get reinforced virgin rubber so it lasts longer, and does not fly up too easily as you move down the road.

I just looked and my mudflap is an Ultra Guard. I'm going to pull the R.V. and have it on level ground to measure it. At the moment I have the jacks down and it could be that the unit is not level. I guess a reciprocating saw with a short blade wouldn't work then?

As was stated earlier, if you have air bags be sure they are inflated to "Travel" height! Then see it you can get the UltraGuard to 4" above the ground. I think that, combined with the Protect-A-Tow, is the maximum protection you can get!
