Full Size Truck 4 Down ??

Has anyone ever towed a full size truck. We have our Grand Cherokee in the shop having some work done and they rented us a dodge 1500 7.5 and i saw it had a button for neutral and the steering wheel stayed unlocked. Is this truck towable 4 down? Just checking for later on because we would like a full size truck we could tow.

Check in the owner's manual. Don't take the word of a seller that a vehicle is towable. Also, watch weights. A full size pick up might be over the capacity of many hitches or towing limits.

tagcat,
Yes Sir, we tow a full sized truck. We have an Itasca Horizon, 36GD with the C-7 330HP CAT engine and Allison MH3000 trans. The truck we tow is, a 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 Extended Cab, 4x4. We also carry an 2008 Honda GL 1800 Goldwing on a lift/carrier, in the back of that truck. The truck is exactly 5300 lbs. and the bike is right at 900 lbs. and, the lift hovers around 269 lbs.

The procedure for setup for towing that truck is simple. It has an electronic shift transfer case. The wife does all the setup. She simply puts the trans in park, parking brake on, and, rotates the transfer case shift know all the way to the right and, after a few seconds of that, an "N" appears on the knob. Once that's accomplished, the transmission stays in park and the parking brake is released. There is no steering lock so, the key is removed. Done!

Now, as has been stated, no matter what truck you may plan on towing, make sure, it's flat towable and says so, in the owners manual. About 99.99% of the GM 1500 series, 4x4 trucks are flat towable, a large percentage of the Dodge 4x4 1500 trucks too. Now Ford, had it's head in you know where, all the way to 2012. Anything prior to that, you COULD NOT FLAT TOW, AT ALL. But, in 2012, Ford changed its operational characteristics of the transfer case and programmed in a "N" for neutral into the system. So, if you want a Ford, it has to be a 2012 or later.

Hope this helps some. Good luck.
Scott

I pulled a GMC Sierra PU behind mine. Typically it has to be a 4X4 (as mine was) that you can put the transfer case in neutral or a standard transmission 2x2. Most 2 wheel drive automatic transmissions will require a Remco transmission pump if they can be towed at all.

I tow a 2013 Dodge Ram 4X4. I like having the room in the bed to carry additional toys.
