Does anyone have an idea on how to get around a smart key for towing?
My new toad is a 2009 Infiniti G37S coupe and the smart key ignition button goes to lock from ACC after towing for a short while. With the button in the on position the batteries die very quickly.
Thanks in advance for any help, Daryl

Is it the battery in the car that dies or the battery in the Smart Key (fob)?
Do you need to have the ignition On or ACC in order to tow? I am wondering if the steering wheel may be unlocked whenever the Smart Key is present in the car. If so, there is no need to do anything else. The only reason for turing a tradional key on is to unlock the steering on cars that use that as theft prevention technique. If your Infinity steering is unlocked, there is no need for any further action.

Gary,
The car has a sleep mode so that if it is in ACC for 45 mins it will automatically go to the lock position. That's the problem. I have to get by the sleep mode that gets the car to lock it self up.
Thanks, Daryl

Hi Daryl,
I do not know Infiniti so pardon the basic questions.
1. When the car goes from sleep mode to lock, what happens?
2. Is there a process you must complete, documented in the owners manual, for towing?
3. Are you towing four wheels on the ground or on a dolly?

Gary,
1. Steering wheel locks.
2. The manual is no help.
3. Four wheels down.
The sleep mode is to keep the battery for dying I guess. The smart key seems kinda dumb to me. I have to trick it some how to keep it in Acc mode.
Daryl

Hi Daryl,
The 2009 FMCA magazine does list the manual transmission as towable 4 down. If you have the automatic tranny this vehicle can not be towed 4 down. With no recommended towing process in the owners manual this becomes a difficult situation. Consider:
1. Contacting Infiniti to determine the correct towing position of the ignition switch.
2. pulling a fuse
3. charging the toad battery as you travel down the road (leaving the toad ignition in the on position) Go to http://www.lslproducts.com/ToadChargePage.html to see the product I use.

Gary,
I have the 6sp trans. The manual talks about starting the car every 500 miles and not exceeding 70 mph but nothing about the locking device. There must be a way. The Infiniti dealer said the flashers will disable the sleep mode but I don't feel like riding around with the flashers on.

You're going to need help from Infinity on this one. Or rig something that mimics the action of the flashers without actually flashing. Or perhaps install a switch that will trigger the steering wheel unlock without having the ignition ON? A smart Infinity tech ought to be able to figure that one out.
Most cars with a "smart key" have some kind of emergency bypass or override. Have you looked that up in the owner manual? Any help there?
