The key is a transfer case with a neutral position.
Our first toad, many years ago, was a Tracker. Great choice. It had well over 100k miles on it (not counting towed miles) before we sold it, only because our needs had changed.

Love my Tracker. I would sell it for $10,000....maybe
Good advice..4x4 w/manual hubs!
Trans in 2nd/park, TC in N and tow away. Stop every 200 and run the engine per Suzuki.

Our last toad was a Tracker. Just had to start it and run it for a few minutes every 200 miles....

Only the 4WD automatic trans Trackers can be towed 4 down. We talked to a couple that bought an automatic not 4WD to tow only to find out it could not be. They still like the car and kept it but bought something else for a toad.
Our Tracker is a 2WD standard. Shifter in N, key on and off we go. 117,000 on the clock, lots of it without the motor running.

We have a 97 Sidekick 4WD, Standard. tows great, but the mileage does roll up while towing. I don't mind since it's got over 130K anyway, what's a few more?

We have been towing a 2002 Chevy Tracker 4 x 4 automatic for the past five years, best vehicle to tow ever. Weighs only 2800 pounds, and with Blue Ox tow bar and base plate easy hook up. Installed separate brake lamps in rear tail lights and wired to the front of the car. Recently installed new Ready Brake and break away system. Good cheap, comfortable transportation on the road.
