I gave a 2012 Vw golf r.

Does anybody know if it can be flat towed ?

what's the owner's manual say? In general, with a manual (that is, a real manual with a clutch, not a PDK or some other manu-matic) you're good to go, but you need to make sure there's not some engine-driven cooling or lube system for the AWD that's not functioning under tow.

I'm almost certain you are going to get a resounding NO from VW AG. That Golf uses a Haldex system (click here for explanation from wiki) and I'm almost sure that it won't be able to be towed 4-down as the same system was used on our Audi TT which we once had that we wanted to tow but were told by VW/Audi that we'd ruin it if we did.

Volkswagen will give permission "behind the scenes" to tow any of their cars with FWD and a manual transmission ...that combination only. We've received written permission from them to tow a Jetta once that didn't have any notation in the manual at the time.

As Remco always says, the general rule is also that exact combination: any car with FWD and a manual transmission can --or should-- be able to be flat towed.

With that said, who knows if things have changed any since we've inquired. We'll be watching this thread to see if anybody is now towing a VW 4Motion with Haldex ...or if you do get permission from VW to flat tow your Golf R.
