HHR Rear Lower rocker/fender Sandblasting
Both of my lower rocker panels have chipped and gotten chalky from debri from my tires. Chevy had a TSB #06-0851-002c regarding this. They'll inspect with local DM and determine if they'll repaint, however to keep it from happening again you'll need running boards. I'm not sure I'll have any luck with them but will attempt. I'm thinking of installing larger mud guards(not the HHR ones) to stop this. Not sure I want running boards or the expense. The area that needs to be painted is about 2" x 8" on the lower rocker in front for the rear wheel wells. I can buy the paint for $10 and avoid the dealership hassle altogether. I've also considered just spraying the small area with black undercoating which would match the mud guards and I could touch up as needed. If anyone has mud guards would appreciate your thoughts. Tx

We just got a 2011 Chevy Silverado to pull as a toad. I put fender flares, large mud flaps and steps on it as we do extensive toad pulling on dirt and gravel in Alaska and the southwest. We found we couldn't get the old style "running boards" with the integral mud flaps any more. Not the current "style" for today's trucks. Don't know what might be available for your tow, but look at availability before you decide. I wouldn't pull without some type of protection.

Doing a little more research I find that bedliner paint is used vs undercoating. Also a the larger mud guard is the way to go. My HHR sits most of the time when not behind the MoHo so we'll have it many, many years. The front shows little wear from towing however the rear fender area is the norm for regular driving.

They do make a clear, stone protector, spray for the problem you are experiencing. I know it is available at all automotive paint stores or it can be applied at any auto paint shop.
