HHR Toad key question

Curious as to whether most HHR toad owners lock there cars while towing and, if so, do you remove the key fob, leave key in ignition and then lock with remote fob? Is it necessary to leave fob in car? Also, is it necessary to run car at each gas stop or end of days travel? I will be making my first trip pulling car to Florida in 2 weeks! Thanks

I had a duplicate key made which is not a chipped key ($8 at Chevy dealer). So the car is not supposed to be able to run with it. Also that key will not unlock the door from the exterior, because the car is sensing a key with the appropriate identity chip. But it does allow me to turn on the ignition (but not the starter position) to shift into neutral and then switch to the off position for towing. So I use that key and keep my regular key and fob in my pocket. I do lock the car doors. If I am towing and don't unhook and drive the car, I start it up at the end of each driving day (using the proper key!!!) and run it through the gears for a minute or two. Can't hurt.

No need to leave the key fob in the car while towing. You can then use the key fob to lock and unlock the doors.
