For what it is worth. Just towed this setup from San Francisco to Barstow over mountain pass and from there to Las Vegas and from there to Kingman Arizona and from there to Flagstaff Arizona and from there to Zion Utah and from there back to Las Vegas and from there back to Barstow and from there back to San Francisco. Around two thousand miles with several mountain passes and in Flagstaff wind gusts to fifty miles per hour. Frame extension, hitch, and tow bar all intact without any visible strain. The setup felt as secure as driving without tow vehicle and actually better in the big winds. After every stop checked for any strain on extension and hitch and none noticed. Would do it again since drove so nice did not even notice tow car behind me up hill and down.

Sounds like a great trip.
I think weight specs are underestimated somewhat for excessive saftey liabilities. Myself I wouldn't worry about a 500# difference. Although I would not exceed that by much. JMO

If I looked under my rig and (the welds didn't look to good), I wouldn't pull anything. What I would do is reweld them, throw a couple of bolts in just to make sure. The pulling strength on a steel channel is alot stronger than the bending strength as you would get from a trailer tounge.

"Built in safety margins" are irrelevant...we don't know if there are any or not. Ratings/capacities/load limits/etc are just that, limits, exceeding a limit is like being pregnant, you either are in limits/pregnant or not.

We don't? I would hope that a stated limit is not the total max or structual breaking point of a hitch or towbar with no wiggle room what so ever. I would find that hard to believe. Don't get me wrong I am not advocating exceeding these limits I am just saying that if you do by a little it isn't that big of a deal. Big rig trucks are limited to 80,000#'s because of the roadways, not because the truck can't haul more weight. A 1/2 ton truck can haul more than a 1/2 ton. The axel can take it. Why do people put on overload springs?
