I am thinking of picking up a used Honda CRV for a toad. What can anyone suggest as the best braking system.

Drove all last year with no toad and missed lots of sights for lack of wheels. Guess my milage will take a hit with the extra weight dragging behind.

"Best" is a somewhat relative term. Least expensive? shortest stopping distance? Most convenient?

The Brake Buddy os probably the most popular and there are now similar units from other manufacturers. The Tow-V-Aire is perhaps the least expensive units with decent performance. The M&G system is one of the most highly regarded but requires more expert installation than most. And its not cheap if you don't have a rig with air brakes.

Lots of choices and the decision may be based on what you find to be most convenient for you, for the price you are willing to pay.

I had the SMI unit for my gas rig and really liked it. Towed with it for 55K and the one problem I had, I got immediate response from the owner of the company who walked me thru the fix. Great product and service...go to www.smi.com I believe

I just picked up a '03 CRV to use as a second toad. Considered the M&G, but after looking at a friends installation I don't think it would fit on our model year. Our CRV has a factory strut tower brace directly in front of the master cylinder. There's no room to move the master cylinder to fit the M&G in.

I went back to my old faithful US Gear brand for the CRV. This is the 4th toad I've put one in and they always have performed very well for me.

Braking systems are like flavors of ice cream....depends on your taste.

I used the Brake Buddy in the old Journey,my brother still uses it...

I chose a more permanent approach and have installed the SMI Silent Partner,where although it's a more permanent mount,there's no taking a box in and out, just hooking up and flipping a toggle switch.
