I'm about to get one of these (2005 or earlier)next weekend and wonder if the MDX is worth the extra price...is it really THAT much nicer? Any functional reason to pick one over the other???

As you know, the Pilot and MDX share a basic chassis, so functionally there's no real difference between them. The Acura has more power, more features (depending on the option packages) and slightly less interior space. It really all depends - is the extra content of the MDX worth whatever the difference in price might be for you.

We looked at both and went with the Pilot back in 2004. Our cousin has an MDX, I believe a year or two earlier model. The engine and drivetrain, etc... are all the same on our 2004 Pilot as on the 2 year earlier MDX. Plus, there really is quite a bit more space in the Pilot. We've found it much more comfortable and all around a great car. It tows behind the motorhome just fine, took it all the way back through South Dakota, Yellowstone, etc.. and back. Be carefull though, somewhere along the line, between the 2004 and current models, Honda stopped supporting the idea of flat towing them. I do not know if they actually changed anything, or simply got tired of warranting things when people did it wrong, but either way, the newer models exclude flat towing, at least according to Honda and their owners manual. Good luck!
