My toad weighs approx 4700 lbs. Should I get a unit that has a towing capacity greater than 5000 lbs? I am thinking about getting a tow bar that has at least 6500 lbs capacity. Is more towing capacity better or not?
Thanks,
Alex

Although having more than needed seldom hurts, don't be afraid to get a unit rated at 5,000 pounds. FWIW, most units are rated for 6,000 pounds.

Blue Ox has changed their towbar capabilities for towbars manufactured after Feb 2011 (not sure of specific date at this writing). Their Alpha tow bar is now 6500 lbs, and their aluminum Aladdin bar is now rated for 7500 lbs.

My understanding is they did NOT just increase their towbar capacities, but actually beefed up their towbars for the higher capacities.

In my opinion, the difference in cost between a 5000lb tow bar and say a 7500lb tow bar is not much, but I personally would feel much better using the 7500lb bar than the lighter one.

Tim the Toolman would say "More Power!!!" Go with the biggest you can get.

I've gone over several bumps in the road and checked in the rear camera to see if the toad was still attached. It's at times like that you are glad you bought the strongest that was available.

I agree with the above. My toad weighs 3150. The differance between a 5000 and a 10000 was not much and who know I might upgrade to a DP and a heavier toad.

SECOND.

Also nomination for "Best response award"

I would go with the 10K option (10,000 pounds capacity)

I agree somewhat to the 'more is better' philosophy, and then there's the weight to strength benefit. I went with the BO Aladdin's aluminum build for it's weight...or lack thereof. I guess as I get older, I'm getting lazier, but do feel the Aladdin is more than safe for our application. Bob
