How old's yer toad?

So I was all set to tow my 2017 Ford F150 behind my 2018 Minnie Winnie 22M. Its a 24 foot class c and has a towing capacity of 7500 and plenty of capacity in all regards. For some reason I kept thinking it might be too much for the short class c (not sure why) so I went back and forth.

Getting an oil change on the Ford and walking the used car lot (bad idea) I spied a 2004 Honda Element. I always liked the looks of them and they are so utilitarian for bicycles, dogs, and other camping stuff. Hmmm, it only has 105,000 miles, it's under 7k, heck I'd tow that I was thinking but thought that they weren't towable for some reason. Then I hear the voice....."do you want to take a peak inside?" Uh oh...."ummmm, sure?"

Immediately smitten with the vehicle a test drive finds me scanning Remcos site and sure enough ITS TOWABLE! So I scan the owners manual and there it is in print directly from Honda. I call my wife and she says oh I love those.....

So now we have an inexpensive toad that is 14 years old and as far as I can tell in great condition, one owner etc. I love the car - but am I nuts?

So my question is - how old is your toad?

My current toad is a 2013. However, I just sold the previous one that was a 2002 and was going strong with just 104,000 on it. I towed it for almost 14 years and around 40,000 miles. I had too many vehicles and wanted to consolidate or I would still be towing the little Chevy Tracker, albeit it was kinda small. The Edge is much more comfortable for 4 adults and can carry along more junk in the Edge too. The Element should be a lot of fun.

I tow a very well kept 2000 2dr Blazer ZR2 4x4 4.3 5spd with 285,000 on the odo. I use a BlueOx tow bar that is 20+ years old, mounted to the front of the Blazer. This toad has a purpose = ride around behind the mh, and take us places off the beaten path.

My uncle towed a bright yellow AstroVan with limo dark windows. Its purpose was to carry his bright yellow and chrome Harley chopper and provide ground trnsportation.

IMHO, your toad must match your purpose, not the other way around.

Sounds good to me! I tow a 2005 Honda Odyssey. Bought it w/108k on it in 2013. Now has 150k plus 41k toad miles. It replaced a 2000 Odyssey that was in a non-towing accident when it had 195k plus 55k toad miles.

Towed a 1995 Odyssey on a dolly for years, then got a 2005 Odyssey that I kept for 10 years. Sold it last year with 105,000 miles. Towed it both on a dolly and four down. Bought a friends '14 CR-V with 6030 miles on it already set up for towing.

2wiresdave-

We have a 2003 Honda Element AWD (auto). I was ready to put a brake system, baseplate and lights into it until I figured out it was a bit too heavy for the hitch rating on our former Class C. Decided to equip the 2009 Fit instead. Now that we have a coach that can tow 5,000 pounds we don't want to spend the money to convert the Element to a toad.

I did buy some parts to make a custom "plug-and-play" tail light wiring harness for the Element.

The Element would have been a great match for our trip out West. The Fit's low ground clearance kept us off some "secondary" roads. It's a great utility vehicle for couples like us.

We have both cars- and the coach- "Fluid Filmed" regularly (my apologies to the English majors for verbing a noun). I don't want a newer car, with all the "stuff," so it's important to keep these on the road until the kids take away our car keys, and "AWD" means a two feet and a walker.

Mine is 5 years old this month. We did not start towing it until last year. I’m not sure I would want to tow a new car or truck, especially if you get of the beaten path. Choosing an older car that his still dependable, seems to be a good idea.
