Ignition question

Question...front wheel drive, to be towed on a dolly. I know to release parking brake, put in neutral, but I am not sure about the ignition switch and why. 2013 VW Beetle. Given OK to tow on dolly, forward.

I would think ignition on if it has steering lock, off if no steering lock. I don't know what else would be affected by the ignition except maybe adding mile if ignition is on.

Who or where did you get the suggestion to turn ignition on? If the dolly has a swivel plate, you certainly don't need to leave ignition on since the car will pivot on the plate. If no swivel, then you might have to have ignition on for the steering to unlock. Check your VW, in mine I can insert the key, turn to unlock the steering, then turn it off. Steering will remain unlocked as long as key is in the ignition. You could use your 'valet' key to limit car functions if you feel it might be stolen.

I got the Acme EZEE tow, but not sure what a swivel plate. The dolly will be here tomorrow. Thanks
