We tow a 2009 Subaru Forester 5 speed - so far about 15k miles. Didn't respond earlier as you requested 4wd, not AWD. Tows well, great on dirt roads - actually same ground clearance as stock Wrangler. Haven't tried rock crawling in it...! Supposedly they go well in beach sand when aired down, just isn't what we do. Haven't been on in a while been busy at work winding down things. Thanks for all of your suggestions and comments.

Like anything else it is going to take time to figure it out. I like the Liberty looked at a 2011 and guess so much for the 3500 pounds....lol. The Subaru looks nice too and many people seem to tow them despite the "official" no from the manufacture.

I do like the cable to the brake set up instead of the device you put between the front seat of the tow vehicle and its brake. When I have the time to look into things further and refine specific questions I will be back to get some answers here. It is a great place for answers, comments and experience

As mentioned earlier I think you may have to revisit "the must haves" and the "would be nice to haves".

The Jeep TJ series (1997 - 2006) has many of the things you're looking for, but like anything else, the more you add the more it weighs. The lightest TJ's weigh in at around 2,200 lbs. The heavier ones are well over 3,700 lbs. Our 2004 Wrangler Sport with an automatic transmission, hard top and a number of other accessories weighs in at 3,750 lbs.

About the only things you're requesting we don't have on our 2004 TJ are power windows, seats and locks. They weren't offered for a couple good reasons. First off the doors are removable. That would require disconnecting any door locks, power windows, and power mirrors.

Secondly the vehicle was advertised as being able to fiord streams. If the doors weren't removed the window motors, locks would likely be destroyed. Since the power seat motors are lower than anything in the doors they would also likely be destroyed. Having said this there are after market kits for adding all of these conveniences.

If we use the soft top the rear windows can be either rolled up or removed.

As for the golden retrievers, they should easily fit in the back seat. About the only storage space would be on the floor between the front and rear seats, and behind the rear seat. Keep in mind the rear seat can be folded or removed. Without it in place there should be ample room for dogs and cargo. With the seat and hard top in place there is only a little over 11 cubic feet of storage space. With the seat folded there is about 25 cubic feet available. With it removed there is nearly 46 cubic feet of space available.

The total length of our motorhome (2013 Winnebago Adventurer 32H) and towed vehicle (2004 Jeep Wrangler Sport) is 52'. The tow bar base plates mount to the frame below original bumper.

The length of the jeep without a spare tire is 150", with the spare it's 154".

We're on our 3rd Suzuki Grand Vitara. The first was a 2002 with a manual transfer case, rear wheel drive until shifted into 4 wheel drive. The 2nd was a 2006, which was all wheel drive with electronic shifter for locking transfer case into 4wd or neutral. The new one is a 2012 with the same setup as the 2006. The Premium model does not have the switch for shifting the transfer case. There are many to be found on line.
