Is there such a thing as a 4 x 4 toad under 3500lbs????
Looking for a simple toad that has a true 4 wheel drive (not 4wd) and weighs less than or close to 3500lbs? Do you guys have any suggestions?

Older Subaru or CRV? If you want an automatic transmission and/or a new vehicle you have a problem.
We wanted AWD and automatic and the best we could do was our Fusion Sport at 4,280 (CAT scale weight).

Our CRV is less than 3500lbs. It's all wheel drive (vs 4wd which is a selectable setting - usually on vehicles with transfer cases....like Jeeps)

All-wheel drive also transmits engine power to all four wheels and will also give the vehicle a better grip on the road in inclement weather than a front- wheel-drive ( or rear- wheel-drive only) vehicle. But an AWD-equipped vehicle lacks the two-speed transfer case that is the defining feature of a true 4WD system.

Some earlier Cherokees like the xj series were under 3500 lbs, more recent Patriot and Compass are under 3500. Just pick a prospective rig and type the year and model plus "curb weight" into a Google search.

Our '92 Tracker is about 2300 lbs and the Samurai we had before it was about the same, possibly lighter. Of the two, and I had both for a year or more trying to decide which to keep, I think the Tracker is the most versatile on/off road because of a larger engine and more power. It also rides better. The Sami has a little better ground clearance. We had the Sami about 5 years and have had the Tracker most of 11 now. We like it and have no plans to change to another toad.
Both vehicles were 5 speed manual with 2 speed transfer case and manual front locking hubs, all of which I prefer. Although it wasn't necessary, I also added rear driveshaft disconnects to both vehicles.

All three generations of Chevy Trackers, Suzuki Sidekicks and Suzuki Vitara / XL7 are divorced transfer case power trains. Auto and stick. They are extremely reliable and versatile, with some convertibles. They have a very loyal fan base, as it is hard to find owners willing to sell. All are under 3500 lb.

2007 is the last model for towing 4 down. Vitara and XL7 must be true 4x4 not AWD
