That is what I like about our Ford Explorer. It has the neutral tow kit that has a green LED under the dash. For the LED to come on, the gearshift must be in neutral, key in correct(unlocked) position, and transfer case in neutral.
Then and only then will the LED blink three times going thru it's checks, if they are all okay then the LED stays on.

Fool proof system, just look at the LED, if lit up, all systems are go.

TXiceman; Been there, done that. But what I found out on my '92 Geo Tracker, when I drive up to the motorhome and turn the key off, IF!!! I don't take the key out, the wheel doesn't lock. It only locks when I take the key out. I don;t know about anyone elses but maybe.....

Seems all Suzuki trucks are like this, as our '99 Grand Vitara does this, too. Um, I've still accidently started to take the key out after hooking up at like, 5:30 AM, forgotten to cycle it, and killed a BFG AT in 100 miles. Duh. It now has a permanent spare tire of a 'normal' size.

I check it before I leave now, and make sure not to hook it up before a big ol' mug of tea in the morning. This was on the second trip, I think, and while I've looked under the steering column cover to disable it, permanently, I've not found anything. I mean, nobody in their right mind would *steal* it....

We have a checklist printed out that we run through everytime we hook up the toad. Doesn't matter how many times we've done it, we still run through it.

We used to have a Sidekick (same as Tracker), and I had this aversion to leaving the key in it. I discovered, after much examination, that they have a 'soft-plug'- about 1" in diameter (thin sheet-metal), on the bottom of the key switch, over the locking mechanism. If you drill about a 3/8" hole in this soft-plug, the steering wheel latch activating spring will drop out. No need to remove the latch itsself, it won't latch without the spring. Voila - no more steering wheel lock! Ours was a '94, but I'd bet that the newer ones are similar. Good luck.
