Jeep Cherokee

Husband bought a 4wd 1996 Jeep Cherokee and has gotten tow bar, lights all rigged -- can we actually tow this thing 4down? Automatic transmission. What do we do to get ready to go?

Many thanks!

Pam, you'll need to verify this is correct, but generally speaking jeeps are great tow vehicles. Place the transfer case in neutral and the transmission in park. If the steering column locks, you'll need to leave the keys in it with the ignition in the accessory position. Verify those steps with your owners manual.

Here's a link to the Remco towing guide for your 1996 Jeep Cherokee.

As with any vehicle, verify with your owners manual, but regardless of what transfer case you have (there's a few choices with Gr.Cherokees), the transfer case has to be in Neutral. Jeeps are great for towing, I have several friends that have them (especially older ones) because they make for a cheap/reliable tow vehicle. As they get older, the t-case shifter linkage can get a little sticky. If it is, try to lubricate it as best as you can, and be certain you are actually in "N" before you head off.
