They make a great toad. They are light, easy to set-up and have plenty of room. They can also take you anywhere.

We had a 1996 Cherokee 4.0 liter which I understand was "the best". We towed it about 30,000 miles with 126,000 total miles on the odometer with no problems. Had the manual transfer case, part time four wheel drive. With reasonable maintenance, it was bullet-proof
Interesting that we traded it in this summer, thinking it had about $2,500 retail value per earlier Kelly BB values. It came up on the lot at $4,999 and we got $800 trade-in. Checked current Kelly BB and it is arount $4,800...
If you can find a good one, go for it!!

Thanks for the info on the 1996 Cherokee, To tow it, do you just put the transfer case in neutral and the switch on?
I have been on craigs list and there's a lot of them in there, all are over 100,ooo miles . Thanks

I have a 2001 Cherokee Sport that I have used as a toad for the past couple of years. I am very happy with it as it is light, roomie and does not have any restrictions on towing 4-down.
to tow I put the transfer case in neutral, the transmission in Park, and the ignition key gets one click to the right.

You don't need to switch in on; just unlocked. Trnasfer case neutral, trans in park, and go. It also helps to turn the heat/ac to off to keep the dust out. We have had many 4 litre Jeeps, and sold them at 155K, 183K 201K etc. They are great cars!

We have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport, has over 90k on it. Been pulling it for past 2 years as a toad. NO problems and is simple to hook up. While I hook Jeep to motorhome the DW hooks up the brakes. Then we check each others work. We also carry a CRICKET (small golf/handicap cart). Fold down back seat, set up ramps, stand beside ramps and drive CRICKET into back of Jeep.

I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee with a transfer case (automatic). I just bought a 31 foot 1990 Fleetwood Bounder and would like to tow the Jeep. Can someone tell me the best way, what tow bar to use, how to hook up and will it affect the motorhomes steering ability. Need a bunch of help with this one. Tried to tow my F-350 Ford 4x4 Crew Cab and it almost put me in the ditch. I can also be reached by email at jim@jimfosteroutdoors.com
Thanks all,

When we traded the '96 Cherokee, we got an '02 Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado, 4.0 L 6 cyl with the SelectTrac Auto Transmission, Manual Transfer case. It came with the Roadmaster frame attachment plates. We googled Roadmaster and got the appropriate, for us, tow bar @ 6,000#. The Grand Cherokee, at about 4,900# (our hitch is rated @ 5,000#)tows very well. We have the Brake Buddy supplemental braking system

You need to watch your weights. Jeeps sit at the edge of the tow bar ratings. While the previous poster has an '02 Grand Cherokee that weighs in at 4900lbs, My '95 Grand Cherokee (Orvis Edition) is 5500lbs. That means I need the towbar that is rated at 6000lbs. I would suggest when you get a tow bar, you opt for a 6000lb one.
I posted here on what my owner's manual said about towing my Jeep. It's pretty similar to most Jeeps I believe. Scroll down to the 14th post.

Our 2002 GC weighed 4200 lb on a scale. The 2005s on weigh much more.
