I am planning a first time trip to Alaska next month. I have a Jeep commander 4X4 or a Honda Accord that I can tow. My question is, are there some good back road trips in Alaska, where I would need a 4 wheel drive vehicle that doesn't get good gas mileage vs a Honda that get's good gas mileage. Those of you that have been to Alaska before could probably advise me which vehicle would serve me better.

Thanks

There are plenty of places where the 4wd really pays off. Our first trips to the great land, I towed a 4wd Blazer and used it! Our last trip, I had my current Honda CRV with AWD. I don't think it got to 4wd more than a couple of times. Enjoy your trip.

I'd go with the Jeep. Besides the ability to do some jeep trails, the Honda will not do as well being towed on some of the rough sections of the main highways.

I would choose the Jeep...better to tow and much more versitle. I own a 09 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and we also have a AWD Honda Pilot and though we love the Honda we preffer the Jeep.

Most definitely the Jeep. Many more possibilities with the Jeep than a Honda in Alaska. We were there last year before we got our new Rubi. Wish we had owned it while in Alaska.

We just got back from a month in Alaska and the Yukon. The Jeep is clearly the best choice if you plan to go anywhere outside the two larger cities.
