Just an observation could the backing plates have had a shearing effect on the frame due to different contours ? ( flat plate vs. curved frame )

I actually am comforted by the miles you have towed the Liberty. It is an excellent reminder to be vigilant about checking for metal fatigue and such. Thank you for the heads up.

Yeah, mounting the break away switch on the baseplate doesn't help if the baseplate separates from the frame. Better to mount it somewhere else.

There's supposed to be a couple of cables that will hold the baseplate to the frame if the mounting points fail. I don't see any sign of them in the pic. These are NOT the same as the safety cables that connect the baseplate to the tow vehicle. As I recall, Blue Ox did not include those with their baseplates until sometime after 2008. Our first setup (new '08 Enclave) didn't have them, IIRC.

Was the base plate and the MH at the same level?
Blue ox cautions about different levels that can lead to metal fatigue.

Jeep liberty

Tow bar was eye ball level, this MoHo about 25000 miles. Last Mo Ho mo ho was probably 6 to 8" higher.
My thought, failure, not enough metal plus a "hand hole" that as. You can see is where it could have started, but that hole allowed the BlueOx backing plate to be inserted. If I were doing it, I would weld some say 10ga into the area to increase the "foot print"".
But then I am taking blue Ox (stock) on my new tow CRV.??
As. A side note Blue Ox gave me all new "stuff" for the new tow. Anyone else wants a question send me your E.
I find this sight complicated & time consuming.

trb thanks for posting about what happened. I wish you the best. I'm going to go out and check the base plate of my Saturn Vue right now.

JMHO, 6-8" difference can cause metal fatigue

I just started towing one . About 300 miles on it. I do have the extra cables back to the crossmember.

I'm not the slightest bit worried. Be sure the tow bar angle is within the recommended 4" and do an annual inspection and all will be good.
