Jeep liberty

I've found a cream puff 2003 liberty to buy to tow. The seller has used it as a tow vehicle. the seller states that when it is towed the odometer racks up miles. Can anyone verify or deny this? it has 100k miles but the seller is saying 30k of those are from being towed.

To tow a Jeep Liberty you put the transfer case in neutral so mileage does not add to the odometer.

Pretty sure the miles do not reflect when towed.

Liberty is a very good toad. Easy to setup and go. Hauls people and stuff, and not too small or too big. An capable for light off-road / trail use. IMHO.

Check the following items closely:

Transmission pan for rust
Front driveshaft boots
Put in 4 wd high and check operation of light on dash
Scan for EVAP "minor" leaks
Valve cover leaks
Heater core leakage
Rear axle seal leaks

All common problems with this car, which if you don't do your own work, can add up. It's a neat little car, but best to be aware of what to look for.

We have an 06 Liberty with 100K on the odometer. I have towed it for over 50K miles. The miles that we tow do NOT record on the odometer!

My 2003 Liberty has about 170,000 miles and still runs great...mileage is not recorded when towing. If its in good shape it is an excellent toad.

A nice car to tow . easy set up . Ours has not been the most trouble free car to own
but nothing excessive . Brakes and tires , both front wheel bearings . Body is still good .A nice clean 2003 would make a nice toad.
BTW , mileage does not accumulate .. And room enough for the M&G brake system too

We had one, a 2003, and towed it a bunch. The towed mileage did not register on the odometer. I think there was a recall on the transfer case, so maybe get that checked. We had to replace the ac compressor too.

We use a 2012 Liberty for our toad. It's a great vehicle ... tows like a dream, easy to hook/unhook. It's enjoyable to drive ... nice ride, firm comfortable seats, nice interior features. It IS deceptively heavy though ... hard to believe that something that small tips the scale at close to 4,200 lbs! ... and if the toad's gas mileage is a concern - be prepared to live with 15-16 mpg. The combination of low mileage and the relatively small gas tank (everything else we drive has a bigger tank) ... it feels like we're always being shocked by the gas gauge needle!!!!!

Still - it IS a great toad!!!

Steering lock 06

I have a question, I just got a 2006 Jeep Liberty with Auto Tranny.
Does this vehicle have steering lock when the key is pulled?

I am setting it up to tow behind the MH. Love the ride!!!

Thanks guys.

Thanks everybody for your replies. I bought a hardtop for my jeep wrangler and my wife is now willing to let the babies ride in my wrangler. I'm gonna hold back on buying the liberty.

mohamer, We have a 06 Jeep Liberty. The ignition key must be turned clockwise to the first stop to unlock the steering wheel and is to remain in that position while towing. You need to read how to set up your jeep for towing in the owners manual. Also we ALWAYS CHECK that the rear wheels rotate and the front wheels turn each time as we begin to tow.

Safe travels and THE JOY IS IN THE RIDE

Rotating

RV735,
Yes, It is good to have rotation!!
I was reading that some of the Liberty Jeeps with auto tranny do not have a locking steering, I have not been able to verify that mine did or did not.
I appreciate the info. The Liberty is a nice ride, hope to do some light trails and looking for Ghost towns.
