I know that the Jeep Liberty with Command Trac can be flat towed because you can put the transfer case in neutral. Can you? and if so what Transfer case set up does it require to tow the Jeep Commander?

I the Commander is like the Liberty, either transer case can be put in neutral. Stop at a Jeep dealer, and check the owner's manual. The method is a little quirky, but once you get used to it, its easy.

Be careful of the Patriond the Compass. I don't believe that these can be flat towedwith four wheel drive - I'm not sure of that.

Poor typing, the first word in my other post is "If".

I have been towing my 1995 Cherokee Sport behind us for now. But we decided that being as the better half is close to retirement this year. We would look for something with less wear and tear and miles on it for our golden years. I like the Jeep but it‘s a different breed these days. My 95 has command Trac that you pull a lever. I think the new ones have Command Trac I & II, Quadra Trac I & II, Quadra Drive and Select Drive and now you push a button. At any rate we decided to see if we could help STIMULATE the economy and bought a 2009 Liberty Sport with Command Trac II. Looked at the Commander but other than being a little bit larger in size and more money plus it will tow less than the liberty. We went with the Liberty. The Patriot (Patriond)and compass are to small. Who cares about spelling as long as the meening gets accross?

We have a 2007 Liberty Limited 4x4 and it serves it purpose very well.

You really have to check with a dealer. Libertys (4x4s only) with Command-trac or Selec-Trac are good. The Commander has to have real four wheel drive that has a neutral. The all wheel drive base model is not towable.

Although they look alike they are very different. The Liberty weighs about 4200 lb. and the Commander 5400 lb. The Commander has a much better ride, but uses a lot more gas.

I was told that the Commander with the Quadra-Drive could be towed. The only difference I see between the Trac- I, Trac II and the Drive II is the Drive II has Limited-Slip Differentials. And it looks like less than 700 LBS difference between the two depending on if it’s 2WD or 4WD. Now all I have to do is remortgage the farm to get a Tow Bar Bracket for the 2009.

Base Curb Weight
Liberty

3.7L V6 2WD/4WD
3985/4269

Command-Trac Part Time 2 Speed; 2 speed
Select-Trac II Active full time 2 speed

Commander

3.7L V6 2WD/4WD
4643/4829

Quadra-Trac I Full time single speed
Quadra-Trac II Active full time
Quadra-Drive II Active full time

The Jeep Liberty flat tows very well. I towed a 2002 Liberty for 7 years with no problems. We just upgraded to a 2009 Jeep Liberty Sport.

The question I have since I have not installed the base plate yet is the Owners Manual states that the negative terminal of the battery should be disconnected during towing. This is different than the 2002.

Is it because of the electronic shifting of the transfer case (not manually) into neutral or just Chrysler worried about the battery being drained with some 12v usage such as Brake Buddy?

My 2002 Liberty has gone 8 hours powering BB without any noticeable battery drain so I am concerned that Chrysler is worried about the transfer case somehow slipping into gear with the battery connected. No help from Chrysler on this question.

Or has it got something to do with the Electronic Stability Control System?

The ONLY answer to flat towing a specific year/make/model/xmission comes IN WRITING directly from the MANUFACTURER (NOT the dealer). Send Jeep an email with your specific model and VIN.
