Jeep Liberty Tow Mileage

We've purchased a Jeep Liberty as our toad, and were wondering if anyone knows if the tow miles always add up, or is there a procedure/fuse to pull which can prevent that. The Jeep has 160,000 miles on it but we knew the owners and the wife said almost 70,000 of the miles were towed. Would like to keep the odometer to a reasonable level. Jeep is in excellent cond even with high miles. New tires, brakes, oil/filter change, trans fluid change, and radiator flush, so it should last for a while. Couldn't really find good insurance for it do to miles, and had to settle. Hate settling!

You didn't mention the year of the Liberty. On my 2002, the tow miles do not add onto the odometer while towing. No fuses to pull transfer case in neutral trans in park and steering wheel unlocked.

We are towing a 2007 Liberty and the miles do not add up.

OD does not advance on our '06.

Towing procedure will be in your owner's manual. Check that for instructions.

2011 Liberty and transfer case is in neutral, so miles are not added.....

Something strange here. Our '12 Liberty (Select-trak II transmission) does not increase miles on OD when towed 4-down with transfer case in neutral.

So, either the previous owners were doing something very wrong, or that Liberty doesn't have the transfer case with neutral, or they lied to you and it's 160k miles on OD PLUS 70k miles under tow.

I guess it's official. Our 2012 Liberty also does NOT add mileage while being towed because the transfer case is in neutral and the transmission in park.

I've towed a 2002 and now a 2011 Liberty and never ran up any miles while towing.

A question for you. Do you have a Liberty Sport or Limited? I see the Sport is listed as towable but not specifically the Limited in the Motorhome Magazine.

If the Liberty has a transfer case then it is flat towable! I believe both models are available with a transfer case in the 4 WD versions. Perhaps you are mistaking a 2 WD version (these are front wheel drive) and are not flat towable.

I just looked in the 2010 to 2012 Towing Guides from both Motorhome and FMCA, and ALL Jeep Liberty's listed are flat towable as they are only available in 4 WD versions with a transfer case. Perhaps older models are not.

Sounds like what we need is the member who asked the question to post back with the year & model Liberty they have. Until then, we're all just offering opinions based on incomplete information.

It would add miles IF the key were left on while towing.
