If you have the VIN number, you can pull up the build list and see exactly what it has in it:

I have the vin so now what do I do? Don't want to give my CC # to these sites.

What CC? Just go to that link and put the VIN number in the small box marked "VIN", next to the Search button. Then click the button.

OK got the Jeep and really like it. Only had one key so I went to the dealer to have one made, $125!! (ouch)! Anyway that's over with. With only one key I could not program it myself, ordered two online today for less than $20 so will program one as a spare and use the other one as a blank. Good info on the blank, thanks.

This Jeep was pulled behind a motor home so it is set up to pull. It has two small (1" to 1 1/4" hitch receivers on the front, I think that is what all the crap that Load Master hangs on for their tow bar, am I correct? I have a BlueOx set up so will remove this crap and install a BlueOx base plate. Thanks to everyone for the help.

Jeeps come in 2x3 types as far as this discussion

2: Automatic or stick shift - Does not matter
3: 2WD, 4WD with manual transfer case, AWD (or automatic transfer)

Only 4WD with Manual transfer can be towed 4 down
The new "All wheel drive" can not, nor can 2 wheel drive automatics

2 Wheel stick shift.. Depending on year may rack up miles when towed.

Now I'm confused, it's a 2004 4X4 with an auto trans. It has a lever to put it in two wheel drive or four wheel HI or LO, is this considered a manual transfer case?

Look at your owners manual under recreation towing. Will tell you everything you need to know.

Pete & Linda, Per your post #22 the Wrangler you just bought can be towed 4 down. Use the procedure mentioned a few posts back. In an '04 you will have to leave the steering wheel unlocked UNLESS you remove (or someone else removed) the locking spring. Pretty easy to remove so you won't need to leave a key in the ignition.

Yes, that is a manual transfer case.

I re-typed the "Recreational Towing" section in the owner's manual found on pages 205 and 206. I then printed it and keep a copy in the console. I use that every time I hook up or unhook. I don't trust my memory to follow the procedure each time and also its unhandy to get the manual out of it's case in the glove compartment and refer to it every time.

I didn't like the cheap plastic case that came with the owner's manual so I bought a case that comes with the 2005 Wrangler. It's a green denim case with an embossed leather Jeep logo on it and a velcro strap-fits in better with the outdoorsy Jeep theme. I found mine on ebay.

I've seen threads where you can use one company's base plate with another's tow bar, with the purchase of a fitting that mates to your base plate on that end and the Blue Ox on the other. As I'm not sure exactly what base plate you have I couldn't check or confirm there is one available for your application but if so, that would be a lot less trouble, and probably less expense, than replacing the base plate.
