Jeep towing

Am I correct that you can tow a Jeep with an automatic transmission four wheels down without a problem?

Yep, no problem as long as it's a four wheel drive and I think that they all are. I've towed two Wranglers. You just have to follow the owner's manual for the proper procedure for putting the transmission in gear and the transfer case in neutral for towing and the ignition key in the correct position. They are pretty light weight and tuck right in behind the motorhome nicely.

YES! They have to be 4 WD with a transfer case. Shift the transfer case to Neutral, put the transmission into Park, pull the key (approx. 2008 and higher do not have steering wheel locks) and tow away to your hearts content.

Agree. My toad is Jeep Liberty. Trans to nuetral, transfer case to nuetral, trans to drive and check no movement, engine off, trans to park, key to first notch (I use dummy key) roll on.

Really depends on the Jeep and the transfer case. Has to be 4x4 (not all are), and it has to have a transfer case that has a neutral position (not all do). Be very careful.

If you have the VIN number, you can pull up the build list and see exactly what it has in it:

OK, that's a Wrangler (you didn't say before), which has a manual transfer case in all 4WD versions. So you're set there.

What year? Sometime around 2007 they stopped putting in the steering wheel lock. If you don't have a lock, you don't need to leave the key in the ignition.

04 so I guess it has the lock, not a problem.

You get this from the dealer?

Easier to get it from any hardware store. They can copy the cut key onto a simple blank, so it doesn't have the circuits to enable the ignition. For about $3. Buying the OEM one from the dealer is probably $50, because it has the enabling circuitry.

Got mine from Home Depot $2.59. Key cutter owned RV and knew exactly what I needed it for.
