For all those who are and lazy and mechanically challenged as I, the total cost for the base place, lights wiring kit, break away switch plus appox $600 in labor costs for my 2012 Jeep Wrangler Sport Unlimited will be about $1,100 plus tax. I sure envy those of you who can do this yourselves!

Reese towbar and Ready brake for approx.$500. Easy do it yourself. Drill existing front bumper. I reinforced inside of bumper with 1/8" strap. Ready brake easy and inexpensive. You don't need all the hi teck tow bar ect to tow your Jeep Wrangler. My Wrangler weighs 3480 dry.

I had a Blue Ox tow bracket installed on my Wrangler. It is attached to the frame and the installation cost $150 at a Jeep dealership. I wouldn't trust the factory bumper for the install point.

My 1990 wrangler tipped the scale at 3,070. With half tank of gas!

Hi, I assume you have a JK Model introduced in 2007. If so you might want to look into a Currie Base plate (Currie Enterprises CJ Axle Parts) simple to install very heavy duty and serves as a base plate as well as replacement for the Plastic "thing" below and behind your bumper to protect the front end. cost is about $200 complete. If you search on the Jeep accessory sites you may find free Shipping ( I did). I went with a Blue Ox Tow Bar but many others are good an will fit the Currie.

Towing my Wrangler

I have finally completed the acquisition of towbar( Stowmaster 5000 and 1424-1 brackets, towbar was a steal on Ebay). Now to the actual towing of my 2004 Wrangler 5spd. I have read that the transfer case and tranny should be in neutral and I have also read that the transfer case should be in neutral and the tranny in 5th gear??? Experience is always the best teacher, so I would be grateful for any info that you Jeep toad owners give me.

There's a reason for the cost difference between a Currie and a Blue Ox base plate. The Currie plate is 7 ga with 3 ga tabs. The Blue Ox plate and tabs are all 3 ga.

I run the xfer case and trans both in neutral, but I think the xfer case disengages the tranny anyways, so I think its a moot point what gear (or not) you select. I'll have to check after work, lol.

On my 1999 wrangler I had the transfer case in neutral and tranny in 5 th gear. I was told that by having tranny in gear it kept the oil circulating. Never had a problem and towed about 50 K miles. My 2008 Wrangler auto has me have transfer case in neutral and transmission in park.

We have a 2009 Jeep Wrangler 4 door JK, I took it and had it weighed with a full tank of gas and it came in at 4560 lbs.

The sticker on my 2004 Wrangler Sport says it weighs 4450 pounds, which is probably pretty accurate when it was stock. I have added a winch and it has rock guards and Warn bumpers front and rear so I am sure it is now heavier.

What does the owners manual say.....?

I believe it says automatic in park, manual in 5th gear.

Actually the "Tow Hooks" on the front of the Jeep are for towing the Jeep, however not on the freeway.

Imagine you are visiting the Conine's farm (Athens, MI If I'm not mistaken) during the annual MUD RACES which they used to host, and they are still hosting. You decide to drive through "The Big Muddy" and like most who do... You don't make it. Old Man Conine, or one of his sons, backs up ye old Catapliier as far as he dares. Tosses you a cable, and you hook it to your tow hooks, He then pulls you out of the mud.

That's what they are fore. Low speed (that puppy can't do 10 mph) 2 person towing.

Oh, and unlike the guy who took the penality and went around... YOU LOST.

Thanks guys for all the info. I have heard "Piddlin"s answer several times before. Makes since to keep the oil circulating. Besides 50K is a lotta miles as long as he didn't break it towin it.
