Jeep Wrangler, Shut off the Odometer When Towing
I'm purchasing a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Sahara, the salesman told me there is a way to turn off the odometer when you are towing. I haven't taken delivery of the vehicle yet, when I do he is going to tell me how it is done. Anyone ever heard of such a thing, I'm very interested. Although I question whether it is legal?

I don't know what your salesman is referring to but most towable vehicles don't register mileage.

No need to do anything, it is a digital odometer .....key off, no power to it, no miles being added.
Salesman does not know what he is talking about

Glad I ask the forum, since I'm a newbie at this towing thing.

Dan, I don't know if you have it set up yet and things bought? but if you do a search(top of the page) on this subject, you will find a ton of info, on towing these JK's.

Good choice and a lot of people using it with good results. Will need to know what Base Plate Brand you want to install so when you order ReadyBrute to get correct connections. I installed Blue Ox base plate but there is couple of other brands that are just as good. RoadMaster comes to mind. For hooking up lights I used the MOPAR harness. Again couple of other companies make harnesses.

Vehicles are divided into two or three classes for this post.
Older, I mean last century older vehicles often used mechanical Speedometers and odometers and those you had to do something since they needed no power to rack 'em up.
(The 1992 I towed had an axel lock, so you towed in park and the wheels ran free, like a trailer)
Modern (this century) cars use electronic speedometers and odometers, These USUALLY do not operate unless the engine is running, Since they get power from the IGNITION lead.
Theory has it (Have never seen) it is possible to have the odometer meter any time the vehicle is moving,,, but pulling a fuse would fix that.

We tow a 2012 Sahara. No key in the ignition, no mileage recorded on the odometer, nothing special to do.
I'll give the salesman a smidgeon of credit, he knew it could be done, he just didn't know how.

Inadvertently left the key in the ACC position on our TJ one time. With the key in that position, the miles DID accumulate on the odometer. With key "off" the miles [on a TJ] do not accumulate. \ken

When you tow the Wrangler, you will be shifting the transfer case to Neutral anyway so the transmission will not be turning. The Speedometer, even though it's digital has it's sensors on the transmission.
