Keep track of towing mileage on Toad
I was having my Jeep Liberty serviced this morning - oil change and tran. svc. Started thinking about actual wear and tear on vehicle and realized I wasn't adding the towed miles, when I was thinking about different other maintenance I needed to do in the next year. Jeep has 64,400 miles on odom. and another 20,000 being towed. Mechanics said front brake had 30% left and rear had 25% left. I had brakes replaced at 48,000 miles. I wasn't thinking about how much the brake assist was coming on, while being towed. I have the assist set at a low pressure, so it only lightly applies brake to toad. Also, struts are being worn out on Jeep bouncing down the road behind MH. Just wanted to give a heads up about extra maintenance that might be good to consider on a Toad.

Good point indeed. Our jeep regardless of being a toad is low annual mileage use. I do recurring service by the calendar, not miles. Plus annually it goes to a jeep specific shop for a good checkup of suspension, brakes, and other components.

Yep, towing four down does add miles to the unit, even if it doesn't register on the odometer.

thought you might be interested, I traded in my 06 liberty in may. It had 90000 miles on the odometer and was towed at least another 120000 mi including 2 trips to Alaska and the top of world highway. tires and brakes was what I replaced. The body was starting to rust, otherwise all was well.

On the last maintenance on the CRV I requested a transmission fluid change. The writer questioned me until I told him it had 25,000 tow miles.
This brings me to another observation about towing; tires. I now have 30K tow miles and 35K+ drive miles and the tires still look good. Doing the penny trick I still can't see the top of Lincoln's head. Is there less wear on the tires when towing compared to driving?

We've also had good luck with our 04 Wrangler. It has 52,000 on the odometer and has been towed another 150,000. To date it's on it's 3rd set of tires, has had new brakes all around, new shocks, and new u joints. If all goes well we'll put another 200,000 on it before it gets retired.
As a side note we use a software called Fleet Maintenance Pro to track the mileage on both the motorhome and the Jeep. It's programmed to give maintenance reminders for both time and mileage.

We have an old habit of keeping a notebook in the car and noting the date, miles, gals, mpg, price for each fill-up. We also note when we had an oil change. Since starting towing we put in big print how many tow miles after each trip "add 8500 miles" so we are well aware of the actual mileage.
We just had to buy new tires. OEM tires. Toad had 30K miles, add tow and we were at 60K.

I am contemplating getting a toad. Never towed anything in my 20 years of Rv-ing. Jeep indicates the wrangler has to be towed while in gear (auto or manual). Will it not add mikes to the odometer?

Putting the transfer case in neutral stops it from happening.

As to the OP question regarding tire wear. I would think towing is less wear and tear on tires as there is no driven acceleration forces. However how to quantify I don't know. And in practice may not be much of a real difference. IMHO.

If auto, the jeep should be in park position - not in gear. If manual, then yes in gear.

I keep a maintenance spreadsheet for all my cars and MH. On the two cars I tow 4 down, I have a tab that I keep track of the towed mileage. On the MH sheet, I have a tab for the tow dolly. I keep track of the dolly and car I normally tow on the dolly.

I think towed miles are easier on the tires as someone mentioned that they are not under their own power.
A good example would be a motorcycle, used to go through three or four rear tires and the front tire would still look brand-new......and no I was not doing burn-outs everyday!!!!!!
