Key on or off

I have an 02 GMC sierra 1500 4wd. The manual says to put transfer case in neutral, leave the key to on (not run), and unhook the ign 0 fuse.(it keeps the prndl and mileage lights from coming on). The steering wheel does not lock with the key removed, so why not tow it that way and not have to pull the fuse? Has anybody towed this way?

Are you certain the steering does not lock with the key removed?

I'd ask the people that are telling you to not pull the key-why not. They should know the answer better then anyone else.

The steering doesn't seem to lock with the key out. I can't ask the people telling me because it is in the owners manual. Probably should do what it says. I just can't understand why.

If it has auto headlights they will turn on and killthe battery. This was what our Saturn and our Cadillac does.

The manufacturer (or your dealer) should be able to find out what the key is all about.

I once tried calling GM Customer Service about a toad-tow issue with my Acadia (it was new model back then) and all they could do is parrot what was in my owner manual (and it was wrong!). I even spoke to a CS supervisor and asked that they consult with engineering on my issue, but they flat refused to do anything. Very disappointing. At a dealership in Wenatchee, WA, I finally found a GMC service advisor who understood the towing issue and had a back-channel contact in GMC's Engineering group. He called his contact and within a few hours determined that the procedure in the owner manual was flat wrong (it apparently had been copied from another model) and he told me what would work right. It had to be "off the record" until GMC made it official, but a TSB was issued just 3 weeks later.
